Infertility

Can I join you ladies?

Hi all, I'm a lurker coming out of hiding. We've been TTC since Feb 2011, first using charting and OPKs. Tried for just over a year and then saw our RE in April, had the full battery and tests and... Nothing. Well, that's not true, they found I have really mild Hashimoto's but otherwise everything checks out. My second IUI failed as of this morning, and the RE is recommending switching to injectables due to poor response and bad reaction to the Clomid. But she then said if we wanted to move straight to IVF, she would. This is a new sharp deviation from the previous plan, and she didn't give a reason for the offer. Hubs is on board with either, leaving me to make this decision. But I feel crazy, like how do I decide to invest so much time/money/effort into such an invasive process with such an unclear diagnosis? If we don't know why it's not working, I feel like it's tossing our resources into the wind. But calendar pages keep turning and I know the older I get, the harder it will be. I just wish there was more rhyme and reason to our case and less "choose your own adventure." Thoughts?

Re: Can I join you ladies?

  • Hi there, welcome to the board! I agree with PP, maybe just get info on all possible options like injects and see what your doctor thinks. Good luck with your decision!

  • Welcome and sorry you are here with us!  If you are able to financially, I always think it is a good idea to do an IUI cycle with injects before moving on to IVF, which allows you and your RE to learn how your body reacts to injects and hopefully help them pick the best protocol for you to use with IVF if that IUI is not successful.  My one IRL IF friend did this and actually ended up having twins and not having to move onto IVF!

  • Thank you for your kind words, ladies! @MrsSJE2011, I think that's a great idea, especially considering what an emotional, swollen basket case I was during the Clomid cycles. I called and agreed to do the injectables IUI, so I pick up the follistim tomorrow. Thank you guys and good luck everyone!
  • Please know that of all the meds I have done through this journey, Clomid had the worst side effects for me!  Lupron gave me headaches and I was definitely uncomfortable toward the end of taking GonalF for my IVF cycle but that was because there were so many follies in there, not really  med side effect.  Never been on follistim myself, but I know it is pretty similar to GonalF.  GL and keep us updated!

  • So sorry your you're here, but welcome!  I agree with the PP about trying an injectible IUI first.  It gives you a good jumping off point and lets you get accustomed to the procedures.  Clomid was THE WORST of all the meds I've been on.  It was an emotional roller coaster!  Not to mention the hot flashes!  Goodness.  When we went back to treatment, that was the one thing I told my RE I wouldn't do again.  I'd do anything but clomid! lol ;)  Best of luck to you & keep us posted!

  • The hot flashes were like nothing I've ever experienced, and I was like a loose cannon! I was constantly crying or super angry, and the bloating was unreal. Then, after all that, I'd get TWO follies. With the misery Clomid brought, you'd think I'd have ten! My follistim and Ovidrel is ready for pickup, and I go to monitoring in the morning... Here we go again! :)
  • Welcome! I'm sorry you have to be here, but as you can see, these ladies have great advice! Clomid was horrible! The hot flashes, like you described, made me think I was on fire! I've used Follistim for a few iui's and my recent IVF. I didn't have any big side effects, besides being swollen in my stomach after a few days, but that's to be expected! Good luck and I hope your stay here is very short!!
