does this seem like too many activities?

The kids started a couple of new activities this summer because they were kind of looking for something to do.  They want to continue them throughout the school year, but I'm not sure if it's too much.
DS1 just turned 5.  He will be in preschool MWF 12:30-2:30, and swimming T/Th 12:30-2:30.  Karate T/Th from 4-5, and tumbling F from 11-12 (will eat lunch at the Y before preschool).
DS2 is 3.5.  He will be in preschool MWF 12:30-2:30, Karate Th from 4-5, and tumbling F from 10:15-11am.  (He will hang out in childwatch during DS1's tumbling class, eat lunch at the Y, then go to preschool on Fridays.)

They have to do karate and preschool.  I mean, they don't have to, but they will.

Not sure about the swimming and tumbling.  Also not sure if I should sign them up for soccer.

It seems like a lot, to me. Swimming for two hours twice a week at 5yo seems like a lot too. DD1's most recent swimming lessons (at 3.5yo) were only 30 minutes and that seemed like enough.

I would do school and karate, if that's what you want, but I'd skip at least the swimming.

  • Swimming is 2 hours long? That seems like a very long time.  I would find a shorter swim class. I wouldn't do soccer.  So prek, shorter swimming, tumbling and karate.  That would be plenty full for my taste.

  • It seems like a lot to me, esp. for kids that little.

But I also tend to take the less is more approach to activities, especially during the school year.

My DD is 2 and I teach part-time so during school she's in daycare 2 full days a week and sometimes one 1/2 day. I limit it to one activity. Daycare seems to be enough for her and for me even. She needs time to just be a kid/unwind/not have all of her days be structured.

But we all know I'm like the free play police so maybe take my opinion FWIW. ;)

  • We only do 1 activity at a time, per kid.  I'd make them choose between karate, swimming or tumbling.

We are also very involved in MOMS Club, so that fills a lot of our mornings.
  • swimming is part of preschool, so part of it is 10 little kids getting dressed and undressed, and at the end they eat a snack.  Maybe 40 minutes in the water.

  • I definitely wouldn't sign them up for more things. I think I would drop either tumbling or swimming. Has the younger one been to preschool? I might only do preschool and karate for him, if so.
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • Thanks!

Maybe we will drop the tumbling.  I signed them up over the summer, just kind of looking for something to do, and they both seemed to get such a kick out of it.

It's only a 6 week class, so maybe I will sign them up and see how it goes.  If they never feel like going, or it seems like a hassle, then we'll just forget about it.

  • Can you do the swimming apart from preschool?  That seems like a lot of wasted time.

It's basically just one activity a day, so it looks fine to me. Oops, just realized that there are two on Tu/Th, but since that's a non-school day I think it's fine. At that age, it's basically playing. It's not like it's a practice and games.

I could, but it would be a 30 minute class, meaning that I would have to hang out there the whole time.  This way, I get to drop him off, put my 2 y/o down for her nap, and have one on one time with my 3.5 year old.

  • That's way too much for me.  I'm doing just 3 days of preschool in the fall for my 4 year old and then when he gets used to that he can do one activity at a time (like swimming in winter, soccer in spring) on a day he doesn't have school.
