TTC After a Loss

TCC after D&C

I hope this is in the right place, I don't want to offend anyone. I had a D&C procedure on 7/19 because I had a blighted ovum. My original gyno said to wait one cycle and try. The Dr. that preformed the procedure said to wait two cycles. I am wondering which advice I should take? I don't want to miscarry, but I also read that after a miscarriage you are likely to get pregnant quickly ( I know this may not be true for everyone. Has anyone else had a D&C and TTC right away? Thank you ladies!

Re: TCC after D&C

  • Listen to your doctor. I would go with the advice from the doctor who did the procedure. If you're not clear on why, pick up the phone and call.

This, and also the last bit about being more fertile? BS if you ask me, don't put your hopes into it.

ETA: I'm sorry for your loss OP.

This.  I think people say that you're "more fertile" because, technically, the pregnancy proved that you are actually able to release an egg, have egg meet sperm, etc. etc., implant blah blah blah.  So, technically, you're more fertile than before, when you may not even have known if you were fertile (or whatever word you want to use) in the first place.

ETA2: Whenever I hear the "more fertile" comment by a physician I ask if that means the next egg does a little strip tease, pole dance, or wears a cat mask to try to lure in the unsuspecting sperm.

Hi @Mmg2087.  So sorry for your loss and that you find yourself here.  As the others have said, you really want to seek clarification on exactly how long to wait, so connecting with your doctor will be important.  Please take a moment to read the blog.  It has a ton of useful information on it  (https://ttcalblog.blogspot.com/p/for-newbies_22.html).  If you haven't done so already, lurk for a while and get to know the board and how it works.  The women here are incredibly supportive when you're ready to jump in and give and receive support.  Sending lots of ((hugs)) your way, and again...so sorry for your loss.

  • Listen to your doctor definitely.  The window I have heard is 6 months out from a mc with improved chances...this was definitely not true for me or for many women on this board, so I'm not sure how accurate that information was.  I think it is probably just smoke.

All AL always welcome in my threads!

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  The OB who did my D&C didn't give me any information about how long to wait to TTC.  He just told me that I would follow-up with my midwives.  My MW just gave me the OK to start TTC whenever I am ready (I am currently 2 weeks out from the D&C).  I realize that this is earlier than a lot of doctors give the OK, but I did want to let you know that some care providers do give the OK after 1 cycle or even sooner.  I'll be listening to my midwives and will start TTC now.

I do strongly suggest that you talk to your care providers and follow their instructions for you.  Every person and situation is different and your situation is likely different from mine.  Is your regular gyno also your OB?  If so, I would call them and let them know that you got different instructions from him vs. the doctor who did your D&C.  Ask why there is a difference.  Good luck as you figure this out.

    Welcome. and GL to you.

There is a study that shows better outcomes for women who conceive within 6 months of a miscarriage:  https://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20100805/study-no-need-delay-pregnancy-after-miscarriage

Of course, this won't be true for everyone, research is all about averages.

This seems really really soon to me. A D&C scrapes the lining so thin that I cannot even imagine trying right away.

I realize that there is a wide range of time periods that doctors tell people to wait, all with their own reasons.  My MWs believe that once fertility returns after a D&C, the lining is adequate to support a PG.  Therefore, what they recommended to me is what they commonly recommend to patients with uncomplicated miscarriages or D&Cs.  Also, as far as I have heard, there is no research showing worse outcomes for PGs conceived immediately after a miscarriage.

Of course, people should wait to TTC until they are comfortable and should ALWAYs speak with their care providers about when to start TTC.  However, as long as the care provider OKs it, I don't think there's anything risky about TTC this early.

I agree that you should listen to your doctor; however, I think you should also not be afraid to ask questions and gain clarification surrounding why. GL.

  • My O/B did the surgery and her recommendation was one cycle and a "normal" period, so when my 1st period was not normal (came 26 days later and barely lasted 2 days), I waited a 2nd cycle. We tried two cycles and then got a BFP that resulted in an ectopic pregnancy. I'm seeing an RE now and when H asked, RE speculated it could be related in that maybe my uterus was an unfriendly place for the embryo to implant due to still recovering from D&C, but didn't embellish on that point. Of course, I am curious if there is any truth to that more so than if I got pregnant on two tries the 2nd time due to higher fertility (we did get pregnant on 1st try, 1st time around, so I doubt D&C helped in that department much).

Other ladies have gave you great advice-I'd say call the surgeon and ask why 2 cycles instead of 1 if you have questions/concerns.
