Reflux in Twins

Does anyone have experience with reflux in both of their twins?
We took DD last week to the doctors office after hitting a point where she was just miserable, turns out she has reflux.
Fast forward to this past week and pedi office is thinking that DS has it as well.  We are off to the doctors office in an hour to confirm.
Wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom to help us deal with this, looks like they will both be taking medication at 6.5 weeks...breaks my heart.

Also - wondering if since they were born at 36w1d, that their digestive system didnt fully develop and that is why they are having these issues?

Re: Reflux in Twins

  • My boys were also born at 36w1d and both have reflux (one is silent that was caught by the pedi at a well check when she saw some signs during the exam). We were given the choice of Zantac for both, but only did it for the one who was actively spitting up. We did all the tricks (elevated bottle feedings, frequent burping, raising one side of the bed...). Only Zantac helped my spitter and the silent refluxer grew out of it. My son who spits up has only recently experienced a decrease in spit up. He is still on Zantac and I even took him for a med adjustment/weigh in today. They are 10 mos. Reflux is more common in preemies (even late term preemies like ours). Poor babes just have a hard time processing that food.

Many hugs, Mama. I know it is really hard to put your baby on medication, but it is so reassuring to see their pain stop. Even though DS2 continued to spit up all day, he was happy and his tummy didn't hurt and that's what mattered. FX you find a medication dose that does the trick ASAP!

  • My boys have been on Zantac as long as I can remember. Just don't miss and make sure they stay at a dosage that is working for them.

  • Thank you for your input and kind words...pedi put them on an antacid to start with, DD seems to be doing better now and is a happier baby, here's hoping the same for DS.
Now just annoyed that Walgreens can't read scripts and put the new one under the wrong twins name! Waste of another 20 mins!

  • Both my of b/g twins had reflux.  They were born @ 32w3d.  DS was the vomit/spit up king, but rarely cried.  DD's reflux was "silent".  She'd drink, burp, scream/cry and refuse to drink more.  We had to go to a pedi GI because our regular dr wasn't comfortable prescribing the amounts of meds they needed.

They were on zantac and prevacid with rice in bottles also.  We used nutramigen formula.  DD was off meds @ 13.5 mo and DS was off meds @ 15.5 mo.  Reflux is awful!!  Thankfully, it didn't last forever.
