Am I wrong?

I cleaned our toy room and purged 2 garbage bags of toys.  A lot of the toys are in good enough shape to sell.
I have a group of miscellaneous small balls I listed (and it sold!).  DH thinks I am wrong to take all of the balls out of the toy room.  Our kids rarely play in the toy room at all and do not play with cars, balls, blocks, etc.

DH thinks I should keep some of the stuff...  just in case.
Other things he doesn't like I am getting rid of is a toddler drum (the one with the sticks attached), the Little People airplane, car and zoo.

Ehh...  I am the one that cleans up after them, it is my choice to sell toys when 2 of the 3 are going into FT school.

Re: Am I wrong?

  • If they don't play with them why does he want to keep them?  JIC they might want to play with them?  I think that's a lame excuse as I'm sure they have plenty else to play with.

    Sell it!

My only thought is you might be surprised what Dylan wants to play with when she's suddenly the only child there during the day.
Fair enough, but she won't play with it if 1) the toy room is too cluttered to walk into and 2) if it is not here.

Trust me, I am far from taking all of the toys out of the house.  I also sold all of the board books too.
  • I don't think you're wrong, but if there is anything that's age appropriate for Dylan, I would keep it a while longer.  Hav's right, when Dylan is alone, you never know what she might suddenly find interesting since the big girls aren't there with bigger toys.  Also, is you DH suggesting you might have more kids?  If that's the case then I would just box them up, not get rid of them.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

dizzykates, you better not be jinxing his V.
We still have tons of toys.  He never flinched an eye when I donated about the same amount of stuff last spring.

LOL, ok, I was just asking.  In that case, I would start posting stuff on Craigslist and get rid of it.  I'm making a huge pile of crap for Goodwill.  I can't stand excess stuff sitting around.  Granted, I'm not getting rid of baby stuff :)

  • I think if you still have a decent amount of toys, why keep ones they have outgrown?  Obviously you're not getting rid of everything, so I would just do it.  I hate clutter and I can only imagine how much crap three kids would accumulate over the years; have fun purging away!

Do you think it's difficult for him to see the baby things go? Maybe he isn't ready for Dylan to be too old for that stuff yet?

  • NO, I don't think you're wrong. I love to get rid of stuff that we aren't using and hate clutter or other unused things. If LO wants to play with balls later, you can buy balls from Target for 2 bucks. No biggie at all! Don't save things just to save them.

  • Nope. Being with DS more often than DH I just k ow better what he really plays with and what he doesn't. If you know they don't get played with, toss em. It's not like Dylan won't get new toys for her birthday and Christmas.

  • OR... you could be like my MIL and save every.single.toy (and piece of clothing!) that DH, his two brothers and younger sister used. You should see their attic. On the plus side (I think!), DS has a ball "checking out" a Little People huge toy set every few weeks to bring home, or playing with hundreds of Ninja Turtle action figures, circa 1988.

Ugh, mine too. You should've seen the hideous 70s baby clothes she tried to give me for DS.

  • Eh, sometimes you have to clear some things out.  I do it from time to time and DS has never even asked for a toy I got rid of, so I think it's fine to get rid of things they don't care for anymore.

I don't think so.  It is not even really "baby" stuff.  I am keeping the LP Princess Castle, but getting rid of the zoo, safari car, plane and one car - but keeping another car and the princess car.
  • I wish you lived closer...I'd take that silly zoo off your hands! ;)

  • This should be my fffc, but recently we were at the inlaws, and the kids didn't play with a SINGLE toy that we brought from home because the inlaws brought out all these toys of dh's and his siblings that they've saved for 20+ years.  They were those little peg people and accessories, mickey figurines and vehicles, some sesame street toys, a little play kitchen and accessories, and other things I had no idea that they even had in their house anywhere.  Ever since then, when I go to purge toys, I think about saving things for grandkids.  So if any of that is your last/only of it's kind, I'd keep one (thinking ONE of the little people toys or something).  But overall I'm all for selling toys!  I just sold a push-walker today.
Yeh, I have thought that too because I am a total "throw it out" person. BUT, in my ILs case, their house could be on an episode of hoarders and I get to hear about an hour of chatter from MIL about how proud she is of herself because she threw out two items that day/cleaned off the kitchen table for the first time in a month/etc.etc. So, even though I'd love to have that around, I don't have the space and I think I'm so far in the opposite direction because of visiting a 5000 square foot house filled to the brim with CRAP. It is nice that the kids can play with stuff over there and that you don't need to bring anything! My son will play for 20-30 minute stretches with their toy kitchen... he has never played for that long at my house!
