Babies: 6 - 9 Months

random screaming during sleep

Lately DD has not been sleeping good....at all. She is super restless, kicking her legs and flopping about plus randomly crying and screaming. Her eyes arent open and it doesn't appear that she's fully awake. But she will cry and scream for at least 5 min each time. Nothing helps. Not rocking her, a paci, bottle, diaper change, nothing.

Any ideas what's causing this or ways to help? It really is affecting her sleep and mine. Which really makes for two grumpy girls.

  • Kinda sounds like night terrors, but I don't know if they have them that young?

  • DD did this around the 6 month mark and i noticed it was usually when she was overtired. It became easier when she started to be more on a schedule and her bed time was always on or around 7. She was unconsolable too and I am pretty sure it was because she was half-asleep. Also, she usually did it around the 30-45 minute mark which is when they transition to a different sleep cycle and I think she had trouble doing this but can self-soothe now.

  • DD will do this sometimes too. My pedi told me not to worry too much about it as long as she's still asleep

  • I agree, it sounds like a really SHORT case of night terrors, especially since it's triggered by being overtired, but so young!! Night terrors don't usually start until about 2 years old.

There is also nothing you can do about them except to do your best not to let them be triggered, that is, by making sure she doesn't get overtired. More naps/earlier bedtime on those active days might help.

How old is your DD (too lazy to do the math from your pregnancy ticker). Nightmares can start much younger than 2. My Wonder Weeks app just said that I could be expecting them to start anytime now. Babies can cry in their sleep from a very young age. If she falls back asleep in 5 minutes then chances are she isn't really awake.

  • If she's not fully awake, have you tried just leaving her? DD will sometimes let out some cries, but if she's asleep I just leave her for a few minutes because going in to help her just wakes her up fully. She generally doesn't actually scream the whole time, sometimes it's a yell or just some whimpers, but no continued screaming that required immediate attention.

Does she have a lovey? I bought DD two of those A&A security blankets because she likes to chew blankets, and the ones we had were to big. They've been great at helping her self-soothe when she wakes up. I'll see her reach over with her eyes still closed and grab it. The difference was almost immediate. Could you maybe try something like that?
  • My LO, now 9 months started doing this a few months ago with teething, but a pacifier always worked. Now she's started doing it again and I've been reading that night terrors can start around 9-12 months. Sometimes she fully wakes up and sits up and screams until we console her, but other times she stays asleep and calms down on her down within a few minutes. We just started (last night) giving her a blanket as a "lovie" to try to see if that helps comfort her and we only heard her once so I think it helped. For the past week every night we had to console her because she was so upset, but last night I only heard her once and she went back to sleep on her own!

Sometimea its a bloody curl cry. I've let her calm herself and sometimes it works but other times it doesn't. She has a monkey that she sleeps with. She will not go to bed without it! So I don't think that's it. She gets them in clumps too. She will scream and stop and repeat at least five times every time it happens

  • Just out of curiousity does your baby have acid reflux? Mine has from the beginning and he did that for awhile and it was his acid reflux, it is getting better since he is getting older.

  • DS has had these episodes too, night terrors - they always seem to happen when he's overtired as some PP have said. He goes down every night between 6:45-7:00 and it seemed to help him having a set bedtime every night.

  • My LO has done this. I figure it is either night terrors or she is half awake with teething pain. At one point it was also due to an ear infection, likely. i always hold her. Eventually she wakes up sobbing and I bring her to see the resident furball to be cheered up before rocking back to sleep. It's heartbreaking and kind of scary sometimes - occasionally her limbs are flailing etc..
