Hello all,
I haven't posted much lately but I really need advice. Background: DS will be 4 in October. He has hearing loss (aided), hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, and some other conditions that indicate he probably has some as-yet undetected genetic glitch. He speaks and signs, has some fine motor issues (common with corpus callosum disorders). He gets ST, OT (recently started), and Behavior Therapy (to address some noncompliance, and will start potty training once his chronic constipation is cleared). His neurologist diagnosed him with ADHD at his last visit based on his constant being in motion, but this has been questioned by some other professionals based on his ability to attend to both preferred and non-preferred tasks. Basically, DS is and always has been a mystery.
I have always wanted to have him evaluated by a developmental pedi b/c I thought every kiddo with delays should be. Now, I feel so confused. His behavior therapist has pointed out some delays in intraverbal and social skills. DS is more talkative with adults, even unfamiliar ones, and while he is interested in other kids he doesn't always seek out playmates or really seem to know how to play like some other kids his age I have seen. He is imaginative and happy, though. Also, being off school for the summer hasn't been great for him and the camp I arranged sucked in terms of structure (but he isn't potty trained so my choices were limited. I have actually had him home with me for the last month)
So, should I go to a devi ped or psych? which one? I don't know whether he will qualify for ASD diagnosis but I know corpus callosum disorders can look like ASD and share some traits.
Thanks for reading.
Re: Really Need Advice re developmental pedi or psychologist (long!)
Thanks, Auntie. I was hoping to hear from you. I have a few more questions. Do you think a psych is a better bet? We are in Orlando and can go to Nemours. None of DS's doctors have mentioned ASD, probably because he is so verbal, social, and has no repetitive behaviors or restricted interests.
Seems Social Communication Disorder may be a consideration
This is where I am at with Nate too. That or ADD (non-hyper variety) Thing is, I have a hard time believing a DX of SCD will not get them social skills services in school
