nwmr- prepaid cell phones?

I have had the craziest week of device issues and won't be able to replace my phone until the weekend at the earliest b/c of a fraud issue, but would like to get a pre-paid to at least have some way to be reached, etc until I can get the new one. Any recs or info on how this works? I assume they are just basic phones that make calls, can you get ones that text too? what happens when you're done using it, does your info get deleted off of it or what?
Thanks!

Re: nwmr- prepaid cell phones?

  • I have a straight talk phone (from Walmart) because it is so much cheaper than any plan I've found. I pay $30 a month for 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts and 30 MB of web access. Since this is the cheapest plan, it may not be the cheapest choice if you only need it for a week though.

I use virgin mobile.  I paid nearly $300 for my phone a couple years back (some Samsung or another).  It's a smart phone (3G) - and I pay $25/month for unlimited data/messaging and 300 minutes of talk.  It's a wonderful deal!  If you go the smartphone route you have to pay quite a bit more up front, but if you get a basic phone, it's even more cost effective.

Virgin Mobile runs on the Sprint network - and I haven't had too much of a problem with coverage (apart from places where it seems nobody gets good coverage, regardless or provider).

To answer your question though - you can talk, text, and your phone will keep your messages etc on it once your plan is up.  I still have a really basic phone back from when I first joined Virgin Mobile back in 2003, and it still has all my contacts and whatnot on it, it's just not got service now.

TracFone is great for this type of situation.  You can buy them at retail stores like Walmart or online.  Simple phones are about $20.  Monthly service is about $20 depending on how many minutes you buy.  All the phones can text.  Because I buy my time online and prepay for one year, my fee works out to less than $5 a month for service.
  • Thanks all! I ended up on the phone w/ Verizon for 2 hrs and got the hold on my purchase lifted so I didn't need one...but someone hacked my acct & ordered an iphone billed to my acct and was able to do it without me ever receiving a notification of the purchase...dr. google tells me this is not an infrequent occurrence unfortunately :( ugh!
