High-Risk Pregnancy

Colored Discharge

I'm almost 31 weeks and have been on modified bed rest since 24 wks due to PTL. I had an ob/gyn visit today to do a FFN test (which is a swab of cervical fluid which tells them if I will go into labor in the next 2 wks) and it was negative. I spoke with my doctor about how i've had increased cramping and contractions the past 2 days and she was slightly worried but told me to continue with more strict bed rest and to use procardia when necessary, if my test came out negative. She said to call if they didn't go away after 2 hours from taking a Procardia. So, that's my plan until my next apt at 33 wks.

After my apt i've gone to the bathroom a bunch and on 2 occasions had colored discharge when I wiped - it wasn't red or really brown... just a twinge of not being clear, which it usually is. I am wondering if it could just be from the swab or if this is something I should be worried about?

The test wasn't like a pap smear - she just stuck the cotton swab looking thing in and let it sit for 30 seconds. I had mild cramping earlier but I took a nap and woke up feeling better, the baby has been moving a little here and there. Nothing else is abnormal.

Thoughts?

P.S. I showed my husband the discharge on the toilet paper and he didn't think it was anything to be worried about... but he's a guy ....

Re: Colored Discharge

  • Any time your cervix is messed with there could be a bit of blood mixed in your discharge. Did they check your cervix for dilation at all?

  • No - she didn't check me for dilation. Only the FFN test.
I decided to leave a message with the on call doctor.. I guess better safe than sorry... i'm so close to my goal 33 wks, I don't want to assume anything at this point.

Good idea to call. Hope LO stays cooking longer.
  • Did they swab you for bacteria or infection? I had a some unusual discharge and it ended up being a staph infection. Any infection left untreated during pregnancy could cause contraction.
  • I have/had similar discharge and my doctors say its normal and is most likely caused by the P17 injections and regular cervical mucus. And it's in high gear at this point during pregnancy.
