Pet annoyance

This is so random...but I'm just curious if anyone has/is experiencing this. Since I've become pregnant, I can't stand my cat! This is my third pregnancy, never had this issue with pets in my past pregnancies, or ever even, but in the last month, just his very presence annoys me! I'm definitely running very hot and cold, emotion wise, this go round...but just thought it odd my loathing the cat! I know I'm just crabby, and I think it's him always wanting to be on my lap, and I just need personal space right now...

Anyone else hating thier pets, or any other weird new annoyances? ;)

Re: Pet annoyance

  • Me!!! I can't stand my sweet dog! She's a golden doodle and she wants in my lap or to lay by my head or me to pet her all the time and I'm just like get off!!!! I feel so bad but geez give me a break! Hopefully that annoyance will pass soon.

  • I love my dog, she's my first baby, but lately she has been attacking me (with love) every morning! She will come into the bedroom and jump up on the bed and just shower me with wet doggie kisses or just lay right on top of me until I submit and get up. Normally, I would find this cute and loveable, but now, when it's hard enough to get out of bed as it is, I want to smack her...

Oh, and the reason I don't just keep my door shut is because if I do, she will sit outside of it and whine at the top of her lungs for me to let her in which in my opinion is worse. She never seems to attack DH with these love fests, just me... maybe she can sense something is different?

  • If I lived anywhere but Texas where it's 1,000,000 degrees my cat would become an outdoor cat immediately. I'm not quite that heartless, but I'm 8 weeks pregnant with a 16 week old cat that won't stop trying to destroy my house and ruin my life. It's really annoying. If only I had known this baby was happening three weeks sooner...
Your cat's still a baby! I know it doesn't make it any better now, but my cat was a spaz when she was a kitten too and now she just sleeps all day long and generally only scratches certain areas.

Have you tried spraying the areas you don't want it to scratch with something that would repel her? (there are some good ideas on how to make your own here, or pet stores generally sell them. In general cats don't like lemon/orange scent so you might want to try that too if the smell doesn't bother you)

Also, get some interactive toys so you don't have to physically play with it so much and it gets tired out on its own. There are some ideas here

  • That's how I knew I was pregnant this time :( I immediately get irrationally irritated with the animals. They just want attention so I feel guilty, but after DD has gone to bed I do not want dog breath in my face. Lay near me, lay beside me, but get the fuck out of my face. I have a 6 month old English Mastiff who's been up my ass since before my BFP. I know he's being protective but just... BACK OFF an inch!! lol

  • Yes! I sent my yorkie to stay with grandma for a few days because she was driving me nuts. Her smell bothers me and she has lately wanted to be right on/next to my belly... Constantly.
  • Nope. Adore my dog. She's super cuddly and comforting. She always senses when I'm not feeling well and just cuddles up. I hope I don't start getting annoyed with her!

This makes me sad. They can sense your emotions, ya know... Negativity is damaging. He prob thinks he did something wrong. And I don't like that you winked at the end after your "hating pets" statement. Hope you learn to cope with your pet in which you chose to own.
  • Exactly the same thing happened to me my last pregnancy.

  • It's pretty sad that some of you are pushing your animals off to the side right now now that your KU.  Animals are NOT emotionally disposable once you get pregnant.

OP, no, I'm not hating my pets right now...wink.  Hopefully your SO is able to give them the attention that you clearly aren't.

.... No one chooses to have an aversion to their once beloved animal. It's a pregnant hormonal/physcological thing. Don't be so judgemental geeze

I am not "pushing my animal off to the side" just because I don't want her jumping on me when I'm asleep. And just because I "want" to smack her doesn't mean I do. When she jumps up and kisses me and lays all over me, I scratch her head and her ears and cuddle with her just as much as I did before, but don't think that this means I can't feel annoyed by the fact that my dog is interrupting what little sleep I get. My dog is a spoiled princess and she loves it and I am happy to spoil her with love, pets and play, but I get to feel however I want to feel!

Thank you so much! I didn't even know repellent existed! He is just a baby and I feel guilty for not having the energy to play with him. Poor kitten.
No problem! And I didn't mean to make you feel guilty. I am really glad my cat is not in that stage right now because I'm too exhausted to be a good playmate - that's why I suggested the toys that do the work for you :)

No wonder so many animals end up at the shelter.  You're a gem.

  • I totally relate!!

I can not handle my pet right now! The mess, the hair, other disgusting habits that come with old age. I have a very bad pet also.

I am too tired and too sick to clean up the daily messes. My sister is pregnant right now is also fed up with
her dog! Most my friends have gone through the same thing, now, or after the baby comes home.

    It's a totally normal feeling!!!!!!!!!!
  • I have been so mean to my dog latley as well. I can't stand to have her laying on me or chewing her bone near my face.. Blah

Get over MYSELF?  Aren't you the one b*tching about how you no longer care about your animals?  Talk about self-centered.

Yes get over you greater than thou self. I was vague about my experience with my pet and like I already said its not something I chose to feel. since you don't know the feeling much less the guilt of feeling that way you have no right to judge people for the way they feel. So get off your throne.

It's not a permanent thing. I got over the frustration while I was still pregnant and things went back to normal after the post-partum period. No one is talking about dumping off their animals or abusing them.

  • I am relieved to see that so many other pregnant woman are dealing with the same frustration!

    Thanks for posting!!!!!
  • Wow...I'm stunned by the negative remarks of this post. I would like to point out I never mentioned neglecting, abusing, ignoring, shutting out nor giving my pet up for adoption. I simply said I thought it was odd he suddenly annoyed me, and curious if anyone else had that/found it odd, hence the wink. Period.

Give me all the sad faces and snarky remarks you want, but I'm a pretty darn good animal owner AND lover. All the pets my husband and i have brought into our home have been rescues, and we've even fostered. Shit, last year we even took in (and still care for) an elderly cat with kidney problems and arthritis JUST to save her from another family dropping her off in a shelter.

Not so nice to make such crude comments based on assumptions.

Exactly a bunch of judgemental assumptions. I too got over it and haven't even experienced it this pregnancy. Don't let anyone make you feel like a horrible person for the way you feel.

  • My dog annoys the crap out of me when I'm pregnant.  But, then again, so does my husband.

  • I posted something similar to this a few weeks ago and got plenty of the snarky comments. So I'm glad to see I'm not alone now. I have three pit bulls (2 80 pounds and 1 45 pounds) so with it being hard to get comfortable anyway I've been having a really hard time sleeping with them in the bed, which they are used to. And they like to do the "sit outside the door and whine" thing too. Also, one has a bad habit of pooping in the living room. Some days they make me crazier than others, so I agree it's a hormonal thing and will go back to normal.

So, OP, yes I feel your pain! And anyone else who wants to make us feel bad for our FEELINGS need to remember they probably have some not-so-flattering symptoms too

Actually, ever since I had DS, my dog has annoyed the shit out of me. At first it was because he's so damn anxious. Every time the baby would cry, he would pant and pace and follow me everywhere. Now his breath smells so insanely bad and he noisily licks himself. I feel so terrible because he was my baby before my baby. Now his life has changed so much. I mean, I don't beat him or starve him, but I do yell at him more and pet him less. :|

I physically cringed when I read the part about him "Noisily licking himself". Ugh, that sound is the WORST!! Nails on chalkboard to me!

Give it to a shelter or maybe someone you know can take the cat for a while until you get used to your hormones.
