I am wondering what I should be looking for when I go to purchase a infant car seat. What are some important safety features I should be looking for? Thanks for any and all input!
My son had the Graco Snugride 22 Infant Car Seat - Platinum, and then we transitioned him to a Britax convertible car seat when he was six months old.
My daughter has the Graco Snugride 32-Metropolitan---I am thinking the equivalent would be equivalent would be Graco Snugride 30-Metropolis. She weigh less, so she is still in this car seat. But we are about to transition her out of this car seat. And I am looking at an Evenflo convertible car seat at Walmart.
I really like the Graco Snugride 32 better than the Graco Snugride 22. I just felt like my son outgrew it too fast, and it has worked better with my daughter to be in her infant car seat longer.
I read a lot of reviews when deciding which car seat to buy. I looked at how it looked. I feel like the baby needs to be comfortable in the car seat, and you have to be comfortable with the car seat as well. Both of these car seats worked for us. And even better, my kids like to sleep in their car seat. This is very convenient if you need them to take a nap.
Regarding safety, we never had any issues with our car seats.
I also like the Chicco infant car seats.

Most infant seats are created equal. The weight limit doesn't matter too much because babies usually outgrow the seat by height before weight (they outgrow height when their head is one inch below the top of the shell).
I would say look for a seat that is easy to tighten, ie tightens from the front of the seat. Also look for one that has a base that the seat clicks into. We had a Chicco Keyfit 30 and love it. We used it until our son was 6 months before we moved him to a convertible seat and then used it as our backup car seat until he was around 13 months when he outgrew the height.
we have 2 chicco key fit 30s. the reviews were good, they fit in the double snap n go, and they start at 4lbs, which is important to us because we're having two, and so far they don't weigh 4lbs! i went into bru to try them out. while they are heavy, i liked them.
I also have the chicco key fit 30 for our son, and an extra base for our 2nd car. I've heard good things, and I also played around with it at BRU before buying.
You might also think about what you want to use for a stroller, because some car seats are more compatible with certain strollers. We wanted to get the Britax B-Agile stroller so we went with the Britax B-Safe car seat which couldn't have been easier to fit together. We were originally going to go with a different seat but it required a converter bar to fit into the stroller which seemed like more of a pain. It really helps to go to BRU and try a few different options in your car so you can see what fits best, what is easier to install, etc. Also you may want to do a car seat inspection before the baby's born to make sure it's installed correctly for your car. They do them for free periodically at Children's Hospital and at some fire departments. There's also individuals who will come to your house and check it for a fee.
