High-Risk Pregnancy

Sort of duplicate: Low blood sugar, WTF? lol

So I was diagnosed with GD on Friday, had my first appt yesterday with doc for it. Plan was to be diet controlled.

Fast forward to my #'s and diet.  Last night before bed 62....yup SIX TWO.  No bueno.
This morning 2 hours after a breakfast of 3/4 cup fruity pebbles (though I would give it a shot) 1 cup 2% milk on said fruity pebbles, and a strawberry light yogurt. #73...yup, still friggin low.
Morning snack: Peanut Butter Sandwhich and 17 grapes
Lunch: Salad (1½ cup lettuce, 1 cup tomato, 1 cup cucumber and 2 tbs ranch) 1/3 cup pasta w/ 2 tbs pesto sauce.  Two hours later and my number is #83, yup still low.
Just had my afternoon snack of watermelon and cantaloupe and am awaiting a call from my new doc to see what the heck is going on.
I have used the control on my meter and it is working.
Also on the frustration scale, my insurance requires that a pre auth be done on test strips.  They covered the lancets but won't pay for the strips until they get authorization from the doc.  ??? this is a serious scratch my head moment.  If I don't get them tomorrow I'm going to have to pay out of pocket and that is going to $160 something, right before tax free weekend.  *sigh*
Any idea ladies on the sugar issue?  Am I the one not working right?

  • Those numbers aren't actually low (that would be anything below 60), they are considered in range. It's great that you are following the diet and are having success staying in range! Also, everyone processes the food differently. Some people can do dairy (whoo! ice cream!) others cannot. Some people need more protein and fewer carbs for snacks, etc. Your doc and/or nutritionist should also have spoken to you about the expected hormone surges that happen around 32 weeks and 36 weeks, making things that worked previously and provided good numbers suddenly not work anymore. All that being said, it looks like you will hopefully be able to have it diet controlled for the duration of the pregnancy (woot!). Hopefully you get the insurance approval for the test strips as well. I don't know why but they price those things like gold!

  • Oh, I also forgot to add, the 62 before bed could have been effected by what sort of snack you had (or how long it had been since you had eaten anything) as well as what time you tested. Overnight our bodies naturally get low sugar (what with the sleeping and not eating) which then tends to cause a spike as extra sugar is released to sustain us. This is why most doctors have you test first thing in the morning (the fasting number) as a gauge, since testing before bed doesn't give a clear indication of how you body is processing the sugar. That being said, if you tested at a point when the sugar was naturally low or if you hadn't eaten in sometime, it could result in the low (but not really reliable) number. Has your doc set you up with a diabetic counselor or nutritionist? They will help explain all of this a little more clearly too. Good luck!

  • Sounds like you're doing good! My nutritionist said they don't consider anything above 60 as low. I saw you had cereal and it made me jealous. I can't have it ever. I had bran flakes and almond milk today and got a 189 afterwards..My numbers are climbing lately (as PP mentioned) I figure it's because I am at the 32 week mark. I use 2 insulin therapies and diet though. Hope you keep those great numbers!

Thanks ladies.  I'm a little miffed that my doc has mentioned nothing about a nutritionist or counselor or anything.  It really just boggles my mind that he just expects me to know this stuff.  This morning my fasting # was 85 and 1 hour after breakfast 92.  I had 2 scrambled eggs and a piece of whole grain toast with peanut butter. So I'm guessing all is good.

My insurance rejected the test strips so now my doc is ordering a whole new meter, lancets, and strips. Hopefully will be able to pick up today.  @Venndetta, nobody even warned me about that spike.  I will be 32 weeks next week.  Thanks for the heads up. @Mello13 thank you as well and your are right, buying test strips seems to be the equivalent of buying a mansion.  I have a serious new respect for you ladies that do this all the time and not just while pregnant. My brain hurts.  =)
