Help me entertain a 2 year old!

Hey Ladies,
I am a recent transplant to the Smyrna area and am having a hard time finding a few things.
1) friends
2) a swimming pool that isn't super crowded
3) things to do with a 2 year old.

1) I will probably just have to work out on my own, but 2 and 3 are driving me insane. We are currently taking classes at the Little Gym in Smyrna, but we need more to do!!! Any suggestions on pools (membership is ok) or kid classes? I looked into the Lifetime Fitness in Sandy Springs but its a Diamond and I'm not sure if I can pull the trigger on that because I will inevitably get lazy and we won't use it much. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

  • Welcome to Smyrna!  Both the city of Smyrna and Cobb County have classes for 2 year olds (dance, music, gymnastics, etc).  You can find the registration information on the website.  Also, I know Smyrna First United Methodist is opening up another MOPS group this fall that meets in the evenings rather than during the day.  I'm assuming there's still space because we just got a flyer on it in the mail.  My daughter goes to preschool there and it's been a great way for both of us to make some new friends, they have a PMO program and their preschool starts at 2.

As for pools, Tolleson's season is just about over, but the county has an indoor pool over on Fairground street, not sure how much membership is because we haven't gone in a long time.

2 year olds are a hard age because they're not quite big enough for some stuff, we spend a lot of time at Tolleson, Cobb, and Taylor-Brawner parks.

  • I'm not a SAHM so I don't have to play cruise director all the time... daycare handles the daily grind.  But for the last year, I've been purposely working less so I could have "fun days" with the kids.  I started a list and we are slowly working our way through it...

New Playgrounds (Cobb has lots so don't be afraid to drive to check out a new one- come up to Acworth- Swift Cantrell is awesome!)

    Library

Baking in the kitchen (special treat for my kids b/c I never cook!)

Go visit Grandparents (we have 4 sets of living great grandparents plus my parents and IL's all in Atlanta- may not be an option if your family isn't local)

I participate in a women's bible study at my church- Piedmont Church off of Barrett Pkwy.  They have free childcare.  Email me if your interested (slwprincess at gmail dot com).  Fall sessions start soon I think.

Ikea free breakfast mondays.  Bonus, if your child is potty trained- free childcare in the play area while you shop :-)

Feed ducks (altho my kids are scared of them!)

Go to the Pet Store (seriously as good as a trip to the zoo)

In the fall, PUMPKIN PATCHES.  There are a few great ones even if you have to drive- worth it.  Apple picking in the mountains is fun too.

We also have a zoo membership and a children's museum membership.  I LOVE the zoo membership and think its probably the best value in Atlanta so if you don't have that- get it.  We could go there every week and my kids wouldn't get tired of it!  Childrens museum is a good indoor activity when the weather isn't good but its a bit stressful for me with 2 kids so I like to have another adult tag along which really limits how often we can go.

  • Thank you guys! That is a great start. I'll have to check out those classes, too!

slwprincess: where do you feed ducks? I'm sure my daughter would be super freaked out, but I haven't done this in years!!!

  • Try finding some mom/kid groups on meetup.com!  We are part of one (though its eastside) and there are lots of play dates throughout the week you can take your LO to.  Look for your area and the general atlanta area too.   Good luck!

we used to go to a pond near my parents house in Fayetteville- haven't taken them in a while since they were so scared.  Any park or neighborhood with a pond probably has ducks so keep an eye out.  Geese are another story though... they are too big and scare ME.

We go to the pond right next the community center in Smyrna,  When the weather's nice, we'll do library story hour and then lunch by the pond.  They also have a small covered park next to the library that we love, it doesn't have much but it's great for the littles!

  • If you are in Smyrna, you can join the West Smyrna Swim and Tennis Club, it isn't free, but clean, nice pool with diving board and clubhouse access (awesome for parties).

We do little gym as well.  If you go across the street from the Smyrna library (don't forget to visit the train park there), there is a pond with a walking path.  It might be fu for hern to see the turtles, large fish, geese and ducks.

we love story time at the South Cobb Library, Mrs. Marks is wonderful, however she is retiring soon, but still fun.

Taylor Brawner is good because its partially shaded we visit there often.  we like the Cobb kidscape park too.

there is a fb page for Smyrna/vinings/mabelton parents here https://www.facebook.com/groups/147027555402926/

If I can think of anything else I'll post.  Good luck, and welcome to the area!!

  • We love our zoo membership! You can go and look at the animals or just hang out at the new splash park, playground, ride the carousel or train, etc. I think it is by far the best membership in Atlanta.

As for pools, I suggest joining the Y.  If you join one of them, you have access to all of them.  The Buckhead Y (on Moores Mill) isn't terribly far from you and has the BEST pool: zero entry, splash zone, water slide, etc.  The Alpharetta Y has a similar setup.

I'd also check out the local mom groups on meetup.com.  I am a member of two of them in my area and there is something on the calendar to do every single day if I wanted to.

Can you please recommend the pumpkin patches/apple picking spots you like? We have pumpkin patches in middle GA but they suck :( We drive up to Atlanta fairly often and occasionally the mountains, but that's my favorite fall destination.
  • We go apple picking at BJ Reece Orchards every year.  It's a lot of fun for DD.  There's a small farm with some animals, hayride, and of course the orchard. There's a produce section and a bakery so you can pick up some yummy fried apple pies.

  • Thank you! That looks so much fun! I'm trying to figure out the price for the apple picking (I know, it shouldn't be that hard!). So is it $2 to get into the orchard and then a set price per pound of apples? I'm so confused and now all I can think about is apple pie!

  • I don't remember, honestly.  We always get the combo ticket that includes the bag for picking (you just fill it - no weighing), petting zoo, and hayride. Not more than $10 if I recall correctly.
