Babies: 6 - 9 Months

XP: How much and how oftern is your LO eating?

  1. DD is 6 months and 1 week, 16 lbs and is exclusively FF. But she never seems too hungry - only after about 5 or 6 hours. Not sure if it's just because she's coming off of a growth spurt or not. I feel like if she has solids even once, its fills her up again for so long that she misses a whole bottle or two, (I always try to offer bottles first but sometimes timing doesn't work out that way...) Because after a bottle she doesnt want to eat anything at all until she gets hungry again so she wont take solids for like 4 hours atleast and then doesnt want a bottle...viscous cycle... So I wind up just rotating between bottles and solids at each feed. But that means only 3 bottles a day, which I dont think is ok. It sounds like wayyyy too little to me, especially since she only drinks 6 oz at a time. She has been steadily gaining weight and has always been in 50th percentile at her doc appts. If she's happy and seems full should I just now worry? My DH only eats one meal a day and is also just never hungry. Curious how much and how often your LOs are eating and what they're eating...Thanks so much!

  • We only did solids once or twice a day at that point, and mostly for dinner since they did fill him up. Maybe try that? At that point I think Sam was doing 5-6oz every 4 hours, and going 10 hours overnight (waking for a 5am feeding and going back down).

Now he's 7 months, 1 week and just dropped the early morning feeding (woot!). So he eats 4, 6-7 ounce bottles a day, and one small 4 oz bottle before dinner. Solids 2-3x (I do breakfast and dinner, and add lunch only if he finishes his "lunch" bottle and seems hungry).

  • We started solids (purees) at 6 months.  He'd eat about a 1/2 jar only at dinner time.  We upped his feedings when he turned 8  months to 2x a day (breakfast and dinner).  He eats about 3/4 of a jar at each meal now.

  • I've got piggy babies. DS nurses on both sides at least 5 times during the day and twice at night. He eats 3-4 Tbsp solids after his morning nap and 4 Tbsp at dinner with us. It's rare that he doesn't finish a nursing session or solids meal. DD was the same way.

  • My DS was doing about the same when he started solids. Some days it was a struggle to get him to finish 3 6oz bottles a day. Just recently I upped him to 8oz first and last bottle and he has a 6oz in between. Sometimes he drinks the whole bottle sometimes leaves an oz.
He has baby food twice a day with 1 to 2oz of formula or water between his regular bottles. So typically 20 to 24 oz of formula a day; eating every 3 to 4 hours.
Babies aren't going to let themselves starve so if she seems satisfied with what she eats and is gaining weight, and has a few wet diapers a day, I wouldn't worry.
  • Thanks for all the advice. Im going to cut back on solids to just once a day for now and aim for four 6 oz bottles. I'd much rather she get all the formula she needs and worry about solids a little later, she's been taking to solids really well for over a month now, so i'm not too concerned about that.

  • The formula is more important than the solids. If she isn't getting enough formula, I would personally cut back on the solids to make sure she gets all her bottles. You can try increasing solids again later. She is still really young.

So give her all her bottles, and if there is room for a solid snack or two, then give them. That's my advice.

My DS, on the other hand, is eating three meals of solids a day, plus 4 bottles of 8 ounces each. I am worried it's too much, but he has an appetite!

  • DD was the same way. At 6 months we only did solids once a day because I wanted to make sure she was getting enough formula. She's a tiny thing too... around 16 or so lbs at almost 9 months. Now she is quite the piggy. She eats 3 meals a day (whatever we are eating) and drinks 5 bottles a day (6 ounces each). I would take it easy on the food until she's ready. Maybe just do one meal and see how she naturally changes her eating habits.
