Advice for quitting my job tomorrow?

So I'm super excited to be in the position that I can finally quit, but now I'm sitting here worrying and being nervous about actually talking to my boss. Part of me just wants to never show up to work again and call it done lol.

Anyway, I was originally going to tell my boss that I would stick around until she found a replacement for me (which I assume would be somewhere around a month, if she hurried with the process). However, now with the situation being what it has turned in to, I just know that I can't continue even trying to stay at that job for any longer. I've only worked maybe 20 hours in the past 2 or maybe even three weeks anyway because I'm just too sick with migraines and/or dehydration to make it in the majority of the time.

I'm not sure how I should go about telling her the situation. I would like to be able to give a proper 2 weeks notice, but even if I do give her the 2 weeks notice I need her to be aware that I'm not really going to be doing her any good for those 2 weeks and I will probably work really minimal hours (like I have been already). I kind of just want tomorrow to be my last day period. The stress of that job is not doing good things for my health, I can tell, and I just really don't want to have to put up with trying my hardest to even be there, let alone get any work done for another 2 weeks.

So what would you do? How would you go about having that conversation in a way that I don't come off as a complete jerk of an employee? Or am I just going to look like a jerk either way?

Thanks for any advice!

  • I would give two weeks notice and just do the best you can to be there...you may be surprised, they may go ahead and let you go. I put in a months notice once and after a week they went ahead and sent me on my way with three weeks pay...

  • I would tell her that for your safety and the babies safety that you have decided to quit and that you'd prefer to not stay for a extra 2 weeks because of the migraines and dehydration. The boss cant make you stay. But if you were to apply for another job in the future and you put them down for a reference they may not give a good report since you didn't stay till the 2 weeks. Good luck!
  • If I were in your position, I would really do my best to give the proper two week notice. While I understand that you may not work to the best of your capabilities, I still think it is the right and professional thing to do.

  • I would give them the two weeks but let them know you still aren't feeling 100 percent. Offer to be available to your replacement for questions, maybe the will throw a little extra money your way, on your way out :) good luck!
  • You really need to be a professional and work our your notice.
  • As many others had said, you need to be professional, give 2 weeks notice, and do your best during the 2 weeks.  chances are they know you won't be going 100%, as you haven't been for some time anyway.  Just think of it this way:  a few years from now you may want to get a job, and if you give proper notice, they can in good conscience say you gave it your all even though you were sick before you left.  if you ever want/need to go back to work, leaving on a good note now is important.
  • After I win powerball tonight, I'll be able to give better advice on how to quit a job.

  • @Soozerella I guess so! This is the first time I've ever bought powerball. I totally got sucked in at the grocery store tonight seeing all the people buying them.

  • Absolutely give two weeks notice (never burn bridges even when you think there isn't any bridge at all). But then explain to your boss that you feel strongly about quitting with adequate notice, however your health may get in the way of properly fulfilling the actual time at work.

Basically have a conversation about it and let him/her help guide you. It doesn't sound like they've been unreasonable with you this far, so I'm sure they will find a way to work trough another two weeks.

And congrats! I was beyond thrilled when I quit my job, so I know that feeling!!
  • @Soozerella...just saw you posted about winning the lotto first...I didn't see it the first time, great minds think alike. I have no idea what time they even draw numbers, I need to be more savvy with this shit.

  • Agreed let them know that due to your health you will need to resign your position. Give the two weeks notice. They will most likely let you off the hook early if they can cover your position easily. If they can't they may need you to be there the last two weeks. Just do your best.
