Trouble TTC

IUI - quick timing and HCG questions

We're going through with IUI#3 this cycle using clomid again, since there is a wait list for injectables where I am (they 'batch' the groups - meaning they need to put a number of clients on BC and then start them all at the same time and I missed the deadline). Annnnyways... here are my questions:

How many hours does your RE wait between HCG and IUI? Our first 2 were only 26 hours from trigger to IUI and I really felt like that was too soon. We will be getting our next IUI from a satellite clinic that's more experienced, and they do more like 36 hours. Just curious about others' timing.

My HCG prescription comes for double the dose I need (1000) so I used half of it and was told to save the other half (it's all mixed) for the 'next' IUI, if there was one. We were told it would be fine as long as it was refrigerated, but we had to stay overnight at a hotel that didn't have a fridge, so it went for the first 24-30 hours after the injection without being refrigerated. So should I cut my losses and pay for a new prescription or is it still usable?

  • Three rounds of clomid (50mg days 3-7) were useless.
  • IUI#1 w/clomid & HCG in May 2013, BFN.
  • IUI#2 w/clomid & HCG on July 23rd. BFN.
  • IUI #3 in August cancelled last minute, due to lab error.
  • IVF#1 - Started Gonal F stims October 13 2013 for IUI. Over-responded with too many follicles, so converted to IVF. Retrieval October 29th - got 5 eggs, 4 fertilized. Had 2 perfect little embryos transferred on day 3 (Nov. 1). The remaining 2 didn't survive to freeze. Got our BFN on November 13th 2013.
  • IVF#2 - Started stims August 21st. Triggered with Suprefact, started on dostinex due to risk of OHSS. Retrieval September 5th - got 27 eggs! 21 embryos on day 3. Embryos deteriorated quickly. ESet 5day blast on Sept 10. No embryos high enough quality to freeze. BFN came Sept. 22.

Reserved a semi-known proven donor in August .

Waiting for consult/screening and protocols with estimated fresh cycle timing in October

Re: IUI - quick timing and HCG questions

  • My clinic gave me a 6-hour window to trigger in, with the IUI scheduled 35-41 hours later. I opted to trigger at the latest time given to cut the wait time to 35 hours.

No idea on the meds! I would call a pharmacist to be sure. How warm did the room get?

  • Hmm... I think the room was just like 'room temp' - maybe 72 degrees. Silly me, I never thought to call the pharmacist. Good idea. Meds seem to be way more expensive in Canada, considering what I have read about what other people say on here. I was just hoping to save a little money, but not at the expense of our success.

I figured that 26 hours was way too early. Especially since DH's swimmers apparently die slightly prematurely, and then washed, they would die even faster. I'm hoping 36 is closer to the magic number.

  • We've always triggered 36 hours before the IUI and did TI the night of trigger & IUI. Hasn't worked for us yet.

About the spoiled meds... I'd call my RE to check, but I'd personally not be able to trust it. I wouldn't want to worry about it for the whole cycle, and if I got a BFN out of the deal, I would agonize over it.

  • My RE recommends an IUI 26 hours after trigger. What was the reason they gave for only using half the HCG med? I was told to use all 10,000.

It's amazing the differences in protocol for different clinics.
  • I second to call the pharmacist.  Also, all my triggers were at exactly 36 hours.  I am really not sure the lifespan on washed sperm to know if 26 was too early.  I am pretty sure unwashed is 24 hours and that it would be shorter for washed.
