How Many OBs until you found "the one"?

After several recommendations and research I've narrowed it down to two OBs in my area. However one in particular has stood out to me and I made an appointment to see her next week. So far from everything I've heard and read, her and her team have nothing but glowing reviews. I'm wondering if I should still make an appointment to meet with the other one, who also has good references, but the other really seems to shine. Did you meet with several OBs before deciding on yours? What did you look for? Is it weird that I seem to be set on one?

Re: How Many OBs until you found "the one"?

  • I had 2.

The first I initially scheduled with my first DD, but when I had spotting and called in (i was FTM) they did nothing for me, didn't allow me to come in early, didn't allow me to speak with nurse or have the dr. call me back, technically I never made it to that one.

From there I found my currently practice, I am scheduled for the same OB as last time, but it looks like they do things slightly different now. Apparently most of the 2nd tri you see  a nurse practitioner I think?

I can't say I love the office as I always had to wait forever for my appointment, and felt that when I was in there I didn't take up much time and couldn't understand what the hold up was.

Also, your dr. is not likely to deliver your baby, somebody from the practice or at the hospital will though, its the laborist model, not sure, but that didn't bother me at all.

I'm sticking with mine for now because they've seen me through two losses and were pretty good about it (despite not giving me any pain meds to deal with the horrible two hours of passing clots last time... but that's another story).  Also, they *seem* to be vbac friendly, deliver at the hospital I want to go to, and have worked with the doula I want, which are all important to me.

My only real other choice would be the surgeon who did my myomectomy last year, because I really loved him a lot and have huge respect for him, BUT... the wait time in his office at appointments is atrocious, the hospitals he delivers at are further away and don't have all the great birthing options I want (like the tub, etc) and I'm also not sure how he'd feel about working with a doula OR how the hospital would work with her.  So those are all pretty huge deal breakers. Plus I'm not sure how it would work if say, I went into labor and he was in surgery or something.

  • Lucky ladies that you get to choose yours. I'm a military wife so I have no choice. Chances are I will never see the same ob or midwife through all my appts my entire pregnancy. And I have no control over who delivers...it's whoever is there when I'm there! :-( Military healthcare is ok because it's low cost but it really stinks not having any options in my healthcare!
  • I'm with the same one I've had since high school, the one my mom picked out for me. I've never had an issue with her. She's really nice, and so far she's listened and addressed all the concerns I've had, so we will see how it goes from here.

  • Just one. I thought I'd keep things simple last time and just see my GP, until I had problems that were out of her scope. (I love my GP!!!!)  That's when she told me that she no longer could provide the best care for me, and the OB that was on call the night I was hospitalized for late term bleeding became my OB by default. To say she was amazing is an understatement. She quite literally saved my life the day I delivered Turbo.

There was no question that I would go back to her for my entire care with this one. Love her, and we got TOTALLY lucky.

  • My entire family goes to my OB. He has delivered 6 of the 8 grandchildren, 2 of the great grand children, performed 4 hysterectomy's on my moms family and my aunt works there. Oddly, I see him at weddings and other occasions. I started going here for those reasons I stay because he provides the best care and my husband and I trust him with my health and the health of our children.

  • My mom recommended my current OB so I made an appt when I was ttc #1, liked the office and went with it. The practice is made up of 5 OBs so during my pregnancy I visited each doctor at least since any one of them could be on call when I delivered. All the doctors were nice, they deliver at my hospital of choice, and the practice is popular (I ended up finding out a few other women I know go there also). Anyway, I'm going there this time around too.

  • Just one. I did A LOT of research online before picking the place and if I would have not liked the doctor I would have kept looking. Luckily, everything has been good so far.

  • I'm lucky, I guess that mine is a good friend of mine. I saw a different doc in her practice for regular GYN stuff initially, but when I got pregnant with DD I knew I wanted someone I really know and trust to take care of us. A little awkward the first exam, but now it's just awesome to have someone I can trust to shoot straight.
