Discordance rate question

Hello all. I just got back from MFM, where they found a 20% discordance rate btwn babies A and B. Baby A (girl), is in the 21st percentile and Baby B (boy) is in the 57%. I'm exactly 33 weeks. MFM doesn't seem too concerned and said 25%-30% would be more concerning. At the risk of sounding like I trust the interwebs over my doc, I do remember reading that some docs consider 20% as concerning.

Anyone have any experience/insight? Specifically, she's estimated to be at 3lbs11oz, and he's at 4lbs10oz. I guess there's nothing I can really do but it would be great to put my mind at ease!

Re: Discordance rate question

  • Doesn't seem like a big deal. At 33w, one of mine was in the 35th and another was in the 75th, (the third was right in the middle) and they were sharing a placenta, and still, no one worried. Just remember, measurements aren't always accurate this late. If your doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't be. Is she on her own curve?

(In fact, the small one was 3'11 and the big one was 4'11, just like yours. They were born a few days later not being nearly so far apart.)

  • Because you are 33 weeks, probably not too much of a concern. Mine have been as high as 36%, now around 28 and I'm happy with it. As long as fluid levels look good and both babies are growing I wouldn't worry.

  • Thanks for this info. It's really encouraging to hear. @Pea-kay, I'm not sure what you mean by her own curve, but she is growing. She was 2lb12oz (44th percentile) at 29w and 3lb11oz (21st percentile) at 33w. I like that she's growing, but her percentile rates indicate her rate of growth is slower than expected.

MFM originally had us coming back in 3 weeks, but given our concerns and that I noticed their discordance jumped from 6% to 20% in the past 4 weeks, we're now headed back in two weeks.

I feel much better reading your stories, so thank you.

  • Since they're di/di twins, the "20% = trouble" rule probably doesn't apply quite the same way, since they wouldn't be concerned about TTTS. I agree w/ PPs that at this stage in your pregnancy, and if their fluid levels look good, I'd trust the MFM that everything is probably fine. Extra monitoring is also a good thing though! GL!
