Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Am I creating a picky eater?

I am in a food rut... Picking "easy" over adventurous. So she has the same chicken, steamed veggies, cut up fruit, hot dog, etc... a lot! Do you think that I am creating a picky eater? What are some of your favorite meals to feed your LO?

Re: Am I creating a picky eater?

  • I feel the same way. DS eats too early to eat what we eat and there are rarely leftovers from dinner. We do chicken, eggs with cheese, eggs, fish occasionally, sweet potatoes, carrots, beans, pouches (won't eat much veggies unless pureed). He has finally started eating some pasta if I make homemade mac and cheese.

  • I know how you feel. I'm getting sick of seeing grilled cheese & mac n' cheese! They are the easiest I must say and easy to send to daycare. I do try to mix it up when I can. I made yummy turkey meatballs in a mini-muffin pan (EASY!), butternut squash mac n' cheese. He'll also eat chicken fajitas. I recently got a book by Tyler Florence called Start Fresh (or something like that). It havs kids friendly food ideas from 6 months up! I've been trying some of the recipes & so far so good. I wish I had found it sooner.

  • I add different herbs/spices to make the flavors varied even if I'm giving her the same things over and over.  So one time the carrots will have garlic powder/cilantro, and the next time I'll make them with cinnamon.  She loves it!  We have started giving her more of what we eat, but even our food can get really repetitive and boring right now because we just don't have the time to cook.  As long as I can vary the flavors of what I'm giving her, I worry less about it being the same thing all the time.

Hmm, hard to answer that but I do think it's important to offer lots of different things and for your child to see you eating them too. Easier said than done, I know.

We try to give DS what we eat: enchiladas, lasagna, chicken teriyaki, mac 'n' cheese (homemade), Shepard's pie, quesadillas, meatballs, pancakes, eggs, grilled sausage and peppers, chow mein or any Chinese food, fish and chips.

It's tough but just keep trying!

We're doing the same.. She eats whatever we eat. I myself was a VERY picky eater. My goal is for her to be a much better and healthier eater than I was :)

  • I don't think you're creating a picky eater, you're just not giving a lot of options to expand your kid's repertoire.  In the long run, this might not be a big deal or it may make her more hesitant to try new things as she gets older.

My son eats a variety, but that's because my husband and I eat a variety of foods and he eats what we eat.  If my husband and I only ate chicken and steamed veggies, that would probably limit what my son ate also.

Our kids eat what we eat. I do meal plan based on that and make sure there is at least one item that I know they will eat. I also limit myself to items that I can prepare within an hour of getting home at night to ensure we all eat dinner together.
    Our easy go-to meals are:
    Baked fish, rice, peas
Chicken with a starch and veggie
Pasta - we love to do veggie ravioli
    Brinner- pancakes, eggs, fruit, bacon
    Shrimp and sausage rice
Slow cooker brisket with sweet potato fries
    Turkey Cobb salad with avocado
  • I feel like I'm in a food rut too.  My daughter seems to eat the same as yours.  Lol...Does your daughter like pasta?  I try different types of sauces with her to change things up.  She'll eat pesto, alfredo, or marinara.  Maybe try turkey?  If she likes chicken, she may like turkey.  Or, how about a rice dish?  I usually end up feeding my daughter a separate meal because realistically, she won't eat most of what we eat.  She's going through a phase right now and I don't mind the extra work at this point.  It's not lack of trying new things either.  My daughter will not eat red meat of any kind. She refuses melted cheese, so no grilled cheese, quesadillas, or even mac and cheese. She's allergic to eggs, peanuts, and shellfish (who knows what else) so I have to be very careful of what she eats.  Trying new things make me nervous with her allergies. I figure someday she'll start liking more things, but right now my priority is to get her to eat.  I just try to supplement with vitamins to make up for those she might not be getting with a varied diet.

  • I feel like DS eats a lot of the same meals too, but are for the most part homemade and healthy. He will try some veggies, but usually spits them out and refuses to eat any more. He wont even eat chicken, which is what we typically have for dinner. So i don't mind spening a little extra time making him something that i know he will eat. he is only 16 months, so we will keep encouraging him to try new things. I'm pretty sure I didn't like green beans, broccoli, or asparagus until I was a little older so I'm not worried.

  • My dd gets whatever we're eating. She does have her favorite foods (blueberries, any type of noodles, and tomatoes). I try to make sure that she has the foods I know she likes regularly. But I expect her to try whatever is on the menu. She's been pretty good about trying at least a little of whatever we put in front of her. Sometimes we coax her into trying things if she isn't already. I just finished reading a good book regarding picky eaters called "French Kids Eat Everything". You should check it out.
