Vacations without kids

Just wondering if anyone has taken a vacation w/o their LOs yet, and how they handled it and their LO handled it. More so how they handled it, since really our LO's will probably adjust fine!

I'm thinking DH and I really need a real vacation away.  Aside from the occasional night or two, DH and I haven't had a true vacation by ourselves since before DD1 was born.

We need one as well, but since DH just started a new job, it might be a while longer   :-S

  • We did quick weekend (2-3 day) trips starting when my twins were 6 months and did several a year, but didn't do an actual out of the country vacation (i.e. 5-6 days) until they were just over 2 years old. We got in two vacations before I was hugely pregnant with Max and now we are back to quick trips again, but have only done one since he was born. All of my kids handle it well. We have pretty good routines in place, so I just make sure that the caregivers (usually one set of our parents, or aunt/uncle) know the routine ahead of time and then everything goes smoothly.

We have a 3 night 4 day trip planned in late Sept. for our anniversary (Max will be 11 months) and I'm a bit nervous about that one, since it's the first trip that we will have done where the kids will all be staying at my parent's house instead of someone coming to watch them at our house. I'm worried that they'll already be out of whack and then we'll leave and things will be more traumatic, but my parents will handle it and we'll only be a few hours away, should an issue arise. It just makes more sense this way, since we want to vacation close to where my parents live anyway, so it would be stupid for them to travel here and then us to head back to the east coast for our trip. I hope it goes well!

My suggestion is, just go! The kids will be fine. Even if it doesn't go perfectly, they'll be alive and taken care of when you return. I've always been of the frame of mind that a happy, rested mom, means happy, well-rounded kids and I also know how important time away is for my marriage. I make sure to get my me time and make sure that DH and I get regular date nights and nights away, so that everyone stays happy! Hope that you can plan something soon! :)

  • We have never done it. Sigh. I would like to though.

  • I would love to but my LO still does not STTN and I still EBF.  So, I don't want to drag a pump around with me and I don't want my parents' sleep to be disturbed so much.  So probably not for a little while longer... DH on the other hand has gone on vacation and business trips without me =(

  • I will be taking one at the end of September to fly down to Louisiana for my cousins wedding. It's not something I would normally consider a vacation, but I plan to make the most of it (somehow) since I'll be without DH or DS.

  • I've done several, and they were all amazing. I have two sets of grandparents nearby, and a million babysitters that I trust. My kids do great, grandparents enjoy the time, and I get a nice break and come back relaxed and refreshed and happy to see them. DH and I usually get a weekend away every 4-6 months. It's one of the main reasons that our marriage is so strong, IMO.

I've left dd2 for : 3 nights in Vegas in March, 2 nights in Napa in April, and overnight last weekend for my bff's bachelorette party. I'll be leaving her overnight for bff's wedding in 3 weeks also.

If you want the time away, find a way to make it happen! If you don't want the time away, then don't worry about it :)
