Success after IF

Clomid experiences

Hi All :)

I have PCOS and was put on Clomid this cycle by my RE. This morning the u/s showed 3 follies measuring at 23 mm and he said I will ovulate all of them in the next day or so.

My question is this.....if you took clomid and ovulated multiple eggs, did you conceive multiples? My husband and I are ok with twins (and we would eventually be ok with triplets after the shock) but obviously, a singleton or twins would be most ideal for them and for me.

Thanks :)

Re: Clomid experiences

  • Used clomid - did not work. But used injects (I don't feel it makes a difference which drug you use because your just talking about the amount of follies you have at time of O) with my first iui and I had multiple mature follies. They gave me the talk before doing the IUI if we were okay with the possibility of twins and we said yes..but only had one. You never know.

  • I did quite a few rounds of clomid and never produced more than two follicles.  The one cycle I did get pregnant it was with a singleton which I subsequently miscarried at 10 weeks.

The thing with a twin pregnancy, and even more so for a triplet, is that it makes the pregnancy that much more high risk.  It's not just about caring for that many newborns or affording them, it's about will you miscarry some or all of the babies, will you be on bed rest, will you deliver early, etc.  Obviously those things can happen even in a singleton pregnancy but the odds go up the more babies you are carrying.  For those reasons, I've always wanted just one baby at a time.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I was on clomid unmonitered for 3 months way back in my newb days. Never had success, so I don't have anything to add except GL! :)

And ditto @itsmevkb - multiples are a risk, a blessing!!, but a risk.

  • I did three rounds of Clomid + IUI. I had 3 mature follicles, then 2 the next cycle, then 1 the last cycle. No pregnancy from those. I did a fourth IUI with injectables and had seven follicles measuring 18-24. Yes, I know... it was risky. But I trusted my RE. We did a different type of trigger to hopefully decrease the amount of follicles that would release an egg. We obviously had the multiples and selective reduction talk with our RE and understood the risks. A lot of RE's cancel a cycle like mine, but I am glad we didn't. We had just one baby!

    Cora arrived 1/23/15 via RCS!
  • In hindsight, my RE did not monitor me appropriately on Clomid.  On approximately CD 8 or so, I had 9 follicles on an ultrasound, but I do not know the sizes so I suppose they could have been small follicles.  We did the IUI on about CD 15 or 16 and I got pregnant with a singleton.

The chances of triplets with Clomid are very low...like I want to say they are about 1 in 400 or 1 in 200 or something. Twins are not uncommon, though. I even know a set of Clomid twins IRL.

  • There is always the chance of multiples, but most of the time, people end up with singletons. The first time I took Clomid, I ended up with 8 follicles and my RE refused to continue. (Because there was always the possibility of fertilizing all of them, turning me into Octomom, and the health risks for that many babies and myself).

This makes me feel better. I think my OP was confusing. I would be fine with multiples, but I guess I was wondering how many of you have released multiple eggs and actually ended up with multiples i.e. probabilities etc. I can't help it, I'm a math person lol (and I would prefer only one obviously)
  • I got my BFP today and I had taken clomid once, 50mg for 5 days, then followed with estrogen & progesterone vaginally (still on it).  One follicle, and I guess the hub has good sperm :)

I do not have PCOS, I just needed a push with menstruating/ovulating.  Both the doctor and I were suprised with the clomid producing one follicle but were still up in the air about it actually getting fertilized.  I didn't overstimulate, which the doctor thought I might do, just one!  And it is all you need :)

I wish you much luck and success.  I was in the negative mind set, because as a pessimist I like to not get my hopes up.  But hey, it can happen!

    07/08/2013 - Start of Clomid 50mg for 5 days
    07/23/2013 - 1 Follicle found

**08/12/2013 - pregnancy test!  Fingers crossed, but ready for neg.
     ** results are in........BFP!!!!
  • Does anyone know if Clomid+trigger shot gives one a higher chance of multiples vs. just Clomid? I forgot to ask my RE and will follow up with her next week, but just curious if anyone knows.

I don't know for sure, but I would think so because otherwise I think the body will usually only O one whereas I think the trigger shot will cause you to release all of them. ..but I am not 100 percent on that. I know people who have gotten pg with twins without trigger on clomid, but I would think a trigger would raise the likelihood.
