High-Risk Pregnancy

Magnesium?

I have seen a lot of posts on here about how horrible being on magnesium is. I was told to take an over the counter magnesium supplement for leg cramps, what type of magnesium is being used for contraction purposes?

Just wondering because I am being tossed around between docs since being put on BR 2 weeks ago for a short and funneling cervix, so I haven't seen an actual OB just perinatology.

Thanks!

Re: Magnesium?

  • It's not the same thing. I think it's magnesium sulfate to stop contractions; that is NOT fun.

  • I assumed they were different, I was just wondering which was which :)

I hope that I can make it through without finding out the joy that is magnesium sulfate! (23w3d)

    Thank you!
  • I hope you avoid mag sulf at all costs. I was handling my PTL with DD until the mag sulf. I couldn't catch my breath, felt like my body was on fire, and my head wante dto explode from being over-filled with cotton. Miserable, absolutely miserable time.

  • Different drug.  Mag Sulfate is administered via IV.  It's the devil, but it works.

  • Yep. Like everyone else said, mag sulfate has a couple different uses. My peri didn't use it to stop/slow contractions but used it for neuro protection for the baby. Apparently it's use is associated with a decreased risk of cerebral palsy in micro preemies. I had 3+ days of mag when on was on HBR before my son was born at 25 weeks and he had no brain bleeds despite being born vaginally. I give a lot of credit to mag for that, even though it was torture.

  • OMG it's like someone opened up your body and pour hot lava inside and then told you to try to relax. Well, the bolus bag is in any case. You get blasted with a large amount for 20 minutes and honestly, it's the most horrid thing I have ever experienced. Then you go on a slow drip for x amount of hours. The first time, I was on it for 36 hours total and the second time only for about 10 or 12. After you are taken off, it can take a few days to feel normal again. Imagine very bad flu symptoms. The first round made me so weak I had to have a catheter. I'm sorry to scare you but it's brutal girl! However, it provides a lot of protection for the baby's brain and *can* slow down PTL. Good luck, I hope you avoid it!!  [-O<
  • I had it last Monday via IV for 24 hours to stop contractions. I actually tolerated it pretty well. I had really bad flushing at the first rapid administration of it, then I was very googly for the remainder. I could not focus my eyes.

We met with my MFM last night and IF I am going into PTL that cannot be stopped, they will administer it again for 4 hours to cut the risk of cerebral palsy by half (neural protection).

  • Ditto that it's not the same thing. FWIW, I was put on Mag sulfate with my last pregnancy, and I can honestly say, I did not have any side effects. I was bothered more by the catheter.

  • Thank you everyone and I am sorry for everyone that had to go through it! But if it does any good at all to help keep baby in or safe when they come out, I bet its worth it.
  • I was on mag sulfate during delivery and for 12 or 18 hours afterward for pre-eclampsia.  Another use I didn't see mentioned here was as an anti-seizure medicine aka preventing pre-eclampsia from becoming full blown eclampsia (which can be deadly) which was the reason I was taking it.  It made me incredibly nauseous for the entire time I was on it.  It can also mess with the formation of new memories.  It saddens me because I don't remember a large part of my son's birth and the first 12 hours after. I also couldn't focus my vision for awhile and I was so weak that it took me a full 24 hours to be able to get out of bed and recovery was long.  But it is a life saving medicine.  Best wishes!
  • Ditto to what everyone else has said. I just want to give some hope in the fact that it didn't bother me much at all. I was flushed and warm but honestly my procardia makes me feel worse than that did. Good luck to you!
  • i was on a mag sulfate drip for about 36 hours, and had no issues.  not everyone has a bad reaction.  fingers crossed for you.

  • I don't know if I ever went pee as much as I did when I was on a mag drip.
  • I had Pre-E, so they put me on Mag Sulfate for about a day and a half, leading up to my C-Section, to prevent seizures.  It worked, but I agree, not a fun thing...started off okay, they gave it to me at on a Monday night and I felt okay, then the next morning I had trouble focusing on things, couldn't focus my eyes unless I closed one, I threw up three times so was put on a no solids diet....yeah, not fun at all.  I do remember the C-Section for the most part, but the part after, when I went back to my room, is a bit fuzzy...I remember trying to text people that baby was here and when I looked back at the texts, a bunch of them were spelled wrong and didn't make as much sense as I thought, lol.  My sis and her husband and my bro came to visit the same day and I very vaguely remember talking to them and not being able to focus on them or what they were talking about.  By Thursday, the next day, they took me off and I was able to start feeling a little better and eating some bland food which I didn't throw up.  I can honestly say, that whole day before my C-Section, was one of the most miserable I've had...but it was all worth it to be healthy and have a healthy baby who only had to spend a short time in the NICU!
