Kidney reflux surgery

Hi ladies, I'm normally a lurker on the oct '13 board but I figured it would be more appropriate to post my question here...
My DS just turned 2 last week and is having surgery on Friday to correct his severe bilateral kidney reflux. Overall I'm scared about every aspect of this but the recovery in particular. He is super super active and doesn't sit still or longer than a few minutes and I'm concerned he is going to over due it and hurt his incision.
Does anyone have any personal experience with this surgery or advise they can provide? Anything would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Kidney reflux surgery

  • My nephew has had this surgery. He was around the same age. He is also very active. He understood he need to be careful and he really just wanted to rest for a few days. In just a couple of days, it was fine.

Thanks for the insight! I'm hoping he will understand he needs to relax for a few days!

  • My older son had it a couple months before he turned 2. I was stunned at how quickly he bounced back. The first 24 hours were pretty awful, but after he got the catheter and IV out he was much happier. By the time we got home the next afternoon, he was back to his old self. It's pretty much impossible to keep a 2 yo from climbing, jumping, etc. The biggest issues we had afterwards were the stents he had to keep the ureters open. They were irritating so he would hold his pee until he couldn't any longer and would pretty much explode. It happened twice in public. Those came out six weeks later and he was fine after that.
  • I meant to add there are a couple other ladies on the Special Needs board who have been through this. And they are very nice over there.

O that's great to hear he bounced back so quickly cause that has me really concerned!! Do you know if they always put stents in? I dont remember his urologist mentioning that but I could of not heard it. How was the incision? I have visions of it being huge and awful looking although I'm sure I'm just being paranoid.
Thanks for the tip of the special needs board, I'll post this over there and see what those ladies have to say.
I really appreciate you responding to this! I'm trying not to have a hear attack before Friday! Of course being 7 months pregnant is making me way more emotional about this!

  • My son had a problem with only one kidney and it had too many ureters and they were in the wrong places. I assume that's why they put the stents in. We hadn't heard about it either until after the surgery. When we took him back to get them out, the procedure took about five minutes, but he still had to be put under, so we were there for a lot longer. The incision was pretty big. About half of his width. The bandage they put on was waterproof so we didn't have to do anything to it. If I remember correctly we went back to the doctor about a week later and he took the bandage off. Two years later, you can barely see the scar. The surgery was about four hours and I was completely freaked out the week leading up to it. But everyone at the children's hospital was fantastic . By the time he was in surgery, I was pretty calm. Definitely bring some trashy magazines or movies to keep your mind off of it. There were lots of people in the waiting room a lot worse off than we were (heart surgery, etc), and that was probably the hardest part of waiting. Just be prepared that when they come out of the anesthesia, they are a hot mess. Nothing would comfort my son. We even brought him some new books and toys and he didn't care. He was just miserable and there wasn't much any one could do. We were put in the 23 hour observation area and I spent the night. It was crazy uncomfortable for me and he didn't sleep well so that was the worst part. I brought my iPad so he could watch Curious George and that helped. It will all work out. Take care of yourself so you can take care of him. Good luck!
  • Thank you so much for the advise and what to be prepared for!!! I'm trying to keep composure but really hoping I'm not gonna loose my sh!t the day of!!
