Veronica- S/O nicknames

I had this on my list when I was pregnant with DD, but discarded it because I think the NN Ronnie is dreadful.  I love the full name though.  WDYT--is it list-worthy?

Any similar names you can suggest?  This is just for fun right now.

Ehhh I don't love it enough to discard it if something better came along. It's nice, but I don't know. I hate saying names sound 'dated' but to me this one does a little.

  • I love Veronica, but I'm with ya on Ronnie. That NN sucks. I think you can stress the full name; I don't think Veronica is one of those names where the NN is just inevitable (like it is for Joshua or Christopher).

That said, the NN was one of the reasons I preferred Monica to Veronica for DD1.

  • Ronnie never even came to mind until you said it.  I really like Veronica.

  • I really like Veronica.

The only one I know who goes by anything other than Veronica is Ronica.  It's pronounced exactly like it is inside of Veronica.  Sometimes people call her Ronnie, but she prefers Ronica.

  • You can also use Vicky or Vera as a NN for Veronica
  • Thanks for all of the replies.

We wouldn't need a NN-- I just don't like Ronnie.  I am glad to hear that wasn't the first NN that some of you thought of.

  • I wouldn't automatically shorten it to Ronnie.  I like Veronica, it's pretty.

  • I had the same exact issues as you. I really love Veronica though, my bff's sister only went by Veronica, no NN.

I've heard of Vera as a NN, although I'm not a fan. I also considered Nica as a NN. I think Josephine and Veronica are lovely together.

  • I'm a Veronica with no nn but I've heard Vera used as one.  I think it's pretty but I might be biased :)

  • Veronica is a great name. You could use Nica as a nn, or just call her Veronica and people will get the hint eventually.

Side thought: Do you call your DD her full name or by a NN (based on her name not like a pet NN)?  If she goes by her full name most of the time, I wouldn't worry about Veronica getting shorten too often.

Good question.  I would say about 75% of the time we call DD Josie.  I do like the flexability of a NN.

  • I've never known a Veronica called anything other than Veronica
  • I really like Veronica and I never hear it. List worthy!
  • I know a Veronica who is 25 years old and goes by the nn Vern.

  • Oddly enough, there was a family that lived down the street from me when I was a kid.  They were "that" family in our neighborhood -- the family with a million kids who were always in trouble.  One of the daughters was Veronica and she went by Ronnie.  She had several kids by different fathers by the time she was 25.  So, that name is tainted for me now.

  • I've never heard Ronnie before. In fact, when I read the thread title I was like, "I have no idea what I'd NN a Veronica."

I'm sure there are other people who have heard of it, but I certainly haven't and I don't think I'm the only one. I think it's safe to assume that Ronnie is not prolific - you certainly should be able to get people to call your daughter Veronica if that's what you want. Don't discard it just because you don't like Ronnie.

FWIW, I have had no problems getting my boys called by their full names and their names have obvious NN. I never think a bad NN is a good reason to discard the full name. In my experience, it's just not the case that the NN sticks when then parents use the full name. GL!

  • An old friend from college has a toddler named Veronica, and she does sometimes call her Roni, but she also calls her Veronica, Lady V, or Little V. Usually the nicknames are used playfully. I thinkthemchild is called Veronica most of the time.

  • Vero (vair-oh), Vera, Nic, Nicky/Nicki, Vern, Verna, Ro, Nica, Vicka (although that one is more for Victoria)
  • The only Veronica I knew, always went by Veronica.  They only exception was her sisters who called her Vero (like Vero Beach, FL).

  • I also don't know anyone named Veronica that has used a nickname. One of my closest friends has this name, and when we're lazy, we just call her "V."
