Birthing outfit?

So I started my birthing class night and I learned a lot. And apparently the hospital I am going to has a new obstetrics wing that is pretty kick ass. Anyways, the Doula teaching the class mentiond that you have the option of bringing your own outfit to give birth in so you don't have to try and hold the robe close in the back while you move around. (They encourage us not to be in the bed as much as possible). She recommended a cheap skirt and a tank top or a sports bra. I do have an old gauze skirt that I could throw away after the birth so I am debating on using this perk. Anyone else using a birthing outfit?

  • Are you doing a one piece or a two piece? She suggested two piece because of ease of use in case you needed/wanted the epidural or they needed to get quick access to something.

  • My hospital just gave me 2 gowns. One to open to the back and then one to open to the front like a robe. I'm not getting my stuff all dirty in labor.

  • I'm only allowed to wear a hospital gown with nothing underneath...boo.

Mine does this too.  Their gowns also have slits over the boobs for easy BFing.  I just wore a sports bra under it to make sure my boobs weren't giving my ILs a show.

  • Last time I spent early labor in an old pair of yoga pants and a tshirt. Once my water broke I switched to a skirt and sports bra- I used that until I got in the tub. Do to hospital policy I had to get out of the tub to push so I threw on an old jersey dress... All stuff I wouldn't care if it got ruined. But everything washed fine. I was so much more comfortable in my own clothes. This time I'm planning a home birth so ill probably just wear the same old dress as last time.

  • If anything, I may wear a black sleeper nursing bra so everything isn't hanging out all over the place then entire time.

That was what I was anticipating, but they have really modernized the the new wing. I didn't think they would have birthing tubs, but they do as well as birthing balls that I could use if I chose too. They are big on having you out of the bed as much as possible and making Mom comfortable as possible. I wasn't expecting that so it was like a kid on Christmas when I found out last night!

This is what I did last time.
    Due October 29
  • Mine will wrap around and tie in the front. The chances of me having a csection are very slim. And i won't get an epidural. :)

Yup, I will just ask for 2 gowns if they don't give me two automatically.  Just put the second one on backwards and no booty flashing while you are walking the halls!

  • I've been thinking about this recently. Last time I wore the hospital gown. I do not remember if I wore 2 gowns or flashed the hall or had something underneath. I wasn't allowed to hold DD after she was born last time because I had a fever and they took her to the NICU. I had intended to nurse right away and this time would like to do skin to skin as well. Nursing wouldn't be an issue 'cause of the slits in the hospital gown. But did anyone do skin to skin in a hospital gown? If not, what did you wear?

  • Last time I ended up naked because I was so hot.
  • I just wear the maternity gown. I do wear a nursing sleep bra or tank underneath to keep everything in place. but I hate nursing through the slits in the gown. So literally as soon as the baby is born I rip off the gown and just keep a sheet over my bottom half. They have me up and showering within the hour, so after that I just put on a nursing tank and yoga pants. So much nicer.

  • I started making a gown. But I may end up using the hospitals gown and wear mine after when chilling at the hospital.

  • I have actually seen on amazon that they sell these really pretty maternity hospital type gowns for birthing in. I considered them but decided it wasn't really in my budget. Last time wore the two hospital gowns. As soon as he was born one of the nurses took the top one off for skin to skin and put a blanket over us.

I still did skin to skin- when I was actually pushing I only had 1 gown on, and it unsnapped at the shoulders too. So when I did skin to skin, I just undid the shoulder and put LO on my chest.
