True Life: The Family Stone makes me want to have 50 kids... or 4

Hello all!

This is my very first post on "The Bump" after coming over from the "The Knot" after our June wedding. The DH and I are now talking family planning and are already getting antsy to get started (ideally waiting until the 6-12 month mark at the earliest) as we are pretty settled in our lives with our careers and owning our home.

We're trying to map out a bit what our future might hold - including how many kids we'll have. We've both said we'd be so happy if we were blessed with anywhere from 2-4.

Here's my question to you all: Is it just me or does watching movies like The Family Stone make you wish for a great big family that will come home to you on the holidays? haha. I just love, love the idea of great big Christmases and family birthday parties, and just a very family-centric life.

DH always jokes that he should have known I'd want a big family back when we started dating eight years ago and were playing the board game Life, and I tried to stuff as many of those little peg children in the back of my tiny car as possible.

I'm one of two children and love my little family... but I think the grass must always be greener in wishing for a large one of my own. :) Does anyone else have any kind of inspiration for wanting a bigger family?

I'm sure I might be whistling a different tune after we have a child or two, but it's fun to dream anyway!

  • I have 5 sisters and 3 brothers...made for some tense teenage closet sharing years! While we have never had any Christmases as crazy as Family Stone, we are all really close still. Oddly enough, none of us want families bigger than 3. But its a lot of fun for the kids involved! Not sure about how my parents felt about it...we are now 27, 26, 25, 25. 24, 23, 22, 21 and my half sister is 6 :)

  • I'd love a lot of kids. But they do grow up, they get married, holidays get divided. That's just reality!
Mil has 4 kids and on average, 2 are home for any given holiday.
  • PS. I love this movie!!
  • I hate The Family Stone- hate it.    I usually love Diane Keaton and Rachel McAdams, but in that movie they make me stabby.

Now Parenthood on the other hand, that is a family I would love to be a part of.  Gotta Love The Bravermans!

All that movie made me want to do was tear my eyes out.
YES. Those people were awful to SJP. Some of it she brought on herself, but Everett never even helped her out. But if brothers swap sisters then everything ends up being OK? I hate the movie!!!

  • i've never watched the movie but i used to want a large family.  of course reality set in and it's just not possible for me. unless i do it irresponsibly and rely on everyone else to help me lol! but i do love big families and if i could manage to have at least 3 before i hit menopause i'd be happy.
