Birthing music

Alright, stupid question but I'm curious if my way of thinking is crazy. Some woman on TV just brought up playing mozart while in labor to sooth you and the baby. I don't wanna listen to god damn mozart. I was thinking listening to mellow-ish music like death cab for cutie, beach house, etc. Stuff that I actually know the words to and can focus on the lyrics instead of contractions. If that's actually possible. They haven't touched on this in my baby books yet so I just wanted to see if you guys have an opinion on it.

I think i'd have ear buds in so I can block out the world.

I would definitely stick with music I know vs Mozart.... I doubt the baby will be concentrating on their way through the birth canal enough to care!

I haven't decided about music.I don't want to "ruin" music I like by associating it with the pain of labor, you know?

When I was in labor with DD I wanted it super quiet. Any noise pissed me the fuck off. I was in so much pain and DH and my mom were in the room chatting & texting people and I remember being like "please shut up". So yea, a mellow playlist is a good idea in theory. You never know if you'll want it on or not, but it can't hurt to bring it.

I do want something relaxing, I too have thought of mellow songs from artists I really like instead of something like classical or meditation-type music.

I'm doing a play list. I'm more concerned for my taste in music though, I think anything I play will sound like mmm mmm mmmm mmmm to baby in the birth canal.

My husband started making a playlist during birthing class of the MOST inappropriate songs to give birth to: push it, 99 problems and a B ain't one, snoop dogs doggie style... Let me know if you ladies want the complete list! Sounds motivating, right?!?!

I'm all about booty music and rap...it makes me happy and I want to dance! For example, Baby Got Back, Push It (deft this one), Daisy Dukes, Gin & Juice, Humpty Dance, Rack City, and think Tupac, Biggie, Puff Daddy, WuTang Clan...don't judge me.

I'll be playing worship music. For you Christians dd1 was born to hillsong savoir lives. Dd2 was born to flyleafs version of how he loves. I like to have h play his guitar while I'm in labor too.

I was thinking Luscious Jackson for some mellow tunes, and maybe some Nine Inch Nails for really bad contractions. Muhahahaha.

I'll be doing a few, who the hell knows what kind of musical mood I'll be in. Hoping to labor at home as long as possible. I'm also hoping to put in my ear buds, get in the tub, and zone out everyone including my husband who is probably begging we head to the hospital now.

Thinking a few yoga mixes - krishna das, enya, dj yogi, etc.

And a few hip hop cardio mixes to keep me energized.

We were talking about this too. I told DH I was going to just bring his Jerky Boys CDs, hahaha!

I asked DH to make me a playlist with country music that I like on it and he randomly in the middle snuck in Push It. I told him I'm sure the OB and the nurses would find that hilarious! He also jokingly said that when it is time for LO to make his debut he should do so to Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangster! At least I know he will keep me laughing during labor even if the music doesn't help.

I just started my birthing class tonight and it was suggested to bring music. I'm excited that the birthing center is fairly new and they encourage you not to be in the bed during the labor process. Some of our relaxing techniques was even slow dancing with the hubby to help distract you. So I'll be bring my ipod and just hitting next on whatever I feel like that day.

I watched the Daily Show and the Colbert Report while I was laboring with DD1. It was an awesome distraction, with DD2 we watched Tommy Boy. Once I got down to really pushing I wanted it quiet and dark.

However I could totally get onboard with an inappropriate music list.

I don't think I'd negatively associate music with the labor. Totally not the same but i got my 1st tattoo to The Postal Service and I never thought twice about it. Not the same amount of pain of course.....

Since I hope to go natural I was thinking of having a loose mix for laboring at home before we head to the hospital. I'm thinking a mix of chill but also a little booty shakin and Rage Against the Machine. In my competitive athlete days it worked well to motivate me through pain.

The Daily Show and the Colbert Report might really work for me, as would a Chris Farley movie. Did you bring Tommy Boy with you on DVD or were you just flipping channels?

Just flipping channels, it was the edited version on tbs or TNT. However our hospital was pretty awesome and every room had an iPod docking station, a DVD/Bluray player, and a flatscreen tv.

When I was in labor with DS, I brought a couple CDs of mellow, familiar music. I loved having it to focus on between contractions, I think it helped me sort of forget about one and be calm before moving onto the next. The MW's intern actually commented on how she liked the playlist, and deduced that we must be the same age since she knew all the words, too. It was a conversation starter, at least.

I always joked with DH that I needed to make a different mix for pushing. I imagined that it would be motivating if right as I started pushing I got to hear the beginning of Eye of the Tiger. I didn't do that, but after I pushed for 4 hours with DS, I think it might actually have been helpful. Maybe this time...

This might be weird, but if I'm in pain, I think classical or chill music would just piss me off - like "music, why are you so calm when I'm in pain, rawr". When I got my second tattoo, Deftones was on and it rocked, so I was thinking that would be good, but part of me would feel bad not having "happy" music for baby. I'm going to make a couple different play lists with a mix of upbeat, emo, angry, and chill music so I can choose whatever works.

With DS we watched a Two and a Half Men marathon (this was before the whole Charlie Sheen freakout thing). I was on monitors, antibiotic IV for GBS, Pitocin, and had an epi so I wasn't getting out of bed. I know our hospital has DVD players in each room. Not sure about an ipod docking station. It has been a couple years since I was there.
