Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Radioactive milk!

So DD is 6 months old and EBF except for a tablespoon of oatmeal we started at dinner time last week. I have to get a thyroid scan and they use a radioactive dye which means I can't touch DD for 2days and can't nurse her for 4days after. I am attempting to pump and freeze until the procedure and then pump and dump while I can't feed her. Anyone have experience with a situation like this? Also, since I have to have the procedure done ASAP I most likely wont have enough stored milk for 4-5days so ill have to supplement with formula. How do I choose which kind?!

Re: Radioactive milk!

  • I had to have a radioactive scan done too, when my baby was 4 months old. I expressed between feeds and each evening leading up to the appointment and froze the milk. I was told I could feed her after 24 hours though, and same with touching her.

Here in Australia there's a helpline you can call to get advice about drugs and breastfeeding, as often doctors may throw a number of days out to you which exceeds what you need to do. Maybe there's something in your area that could help clarify too, if you wanted to.

It's hard to know for formula but I've had friends in similar situation who will use a 'sensitive' mix just in case, and mix up the formula and milk feeds so it was easier on the baby's tummy.

  • I had a similar situation but it was an emergency scan, so I didn't have a chance to save up. I had to pump and dump for 24 hours. We ended up using Enfamil ready to feed formula. (At the time that we did this, we were unaware that LO had a dairy allergy.). As long as LO doesn't have a dietary consideration I would go with either Similac or Enfamil gentle or sensitive.
