Hand or arm numbness while laying down or sleeping

I have a question. For the last about 5 nights now, I wake up many times throughout the night with numbness in my hands and arms (both sides). But mostly my hands. This happens on both arms. Not just the side I'm sleeping on. I try to sleep mostly on my left side with a pillow wedge behind my back and a body pillow in front of me and between my legs. Sometimes i end up needing to switch to the right side to get comfortable, but I NEVER sleep on my back. These last nights, my hands and arms have been making me so uncomfortable, I end up switching back and forth alot to try to hopefully relieve it, but nothing seems to work. If i wiggle and shake my hand, eventually the numbness goes away after a few minutes. But it can be quite painfull until it goes away.  This morning even after I sat up, It still took a few minutes to make it go away in my right hand. I never get this during the day or at work (I'm a hairstlyist) thankfully. Just at night or when I've been laying down for a while. I looked this up online, and they say it probably is pregnancy carpal tunnel, and If you where wrist braces at night, it should help relieve it. But that nothing will completely make it go away until the baby delivers. I wanted to find out is this what you think it is? and should I get wrist braces? or is there something else I can do? Also if this is what this is, should I expect that it may start affecting me during the day/at work? or do most people tend to only get this while laying down?? Anybody have the same problem?? Or have you heard anything more about this??

  • My arms, legs, hands and feet fall asleep sooo much more now that I'm pregnant. I wake up multiple time a night because of it and I notice it a lot during the day too.

It seems normal becasue your circulation is all messed up while pregnant anywa

  • I have had this happen too.  It usually goes away once I switch positions so I always just assumed I was sleeping in a bad position.  I am not too concerned about it.

For hands/wrist it maybe Carpal Tunnel. I get it as well. Sleeping with a brace on is supposed to help. Apparently it goes away after childbirth.

Yes it's pregnancy carpel tunnel. Very common. Wrist splints at night will help. The reason it happens at night is because you aren't aware of your body positioning and by default your hands naturally relax and flex forward. Also it can happen at your elb
  • Everything falls asleep on me lately at the drop of the hat. Makes getting comfortable extremely difficult and frustrating. I spend a lot of time rearranging myself.

    Annoying, but not worrisome.

  • Yes, it is carpal tunnel. Which I learned the hard way 1st tri of 1st pregnancy is a prett common thing during pregnancy.  Wrist braces can help and I used them first pregnsncy.  It can become a problem throughout the day, although it generally

It happened with me during my first pregnancy.  I only had the symptoms at night.  I ended sleeping with braces and they did help.  The only problem was there were many nights I would take one off and not realize it until I woke up. &nbs

  • I have same thing too, everytime I go asleep and wake up middle of night, my arms, hands and sometimes feet are numb. I asked Doc about it and she said it won't go away until after baby born... it's from hormones in me, out of wack and it won't go back un

  • Sounds like carpal tunnel to me. I've got it too and was miserable before I started wearing the wrist braces to sleep. Two nights before I decided to try the braces it went from being numb and waking me up all night to waking up with fingers frozen stiff,

  • Glad to hear that this is not just me. Last night it happened worse then usual and it kept waking me up. I really only effects my one arm. I think I am going to try wrapping an ace bandage around it tonight and see if that helps. If not then I will try a brace. I am 33 weeks so I dont want to have to go out and buy something that I will only need for a few weeks if I can live without.
  • Mine do it while sleeping and sometimes I get a tingling sensation in my armpits if my arms are hanging a certain way during the day too. I've been chalking it up to weird prego symptoms having to do with the change in circulation due to increased blood flow.

  • Sounds like you need a chiropractic adjustment. Super helpful in pregnancy if you have regular adjustments!
  • Yup.  Pretty common.  It's pregnancy related carpal tunnel for me.  It goes way almost immediately after delivery...or did for me the first time.  It's just...inconvenient.
