Babies: 0 - 3 Months

baby nap schedules???

My LO is 2 months today. Everything I read says that they should fall into a predictable schedule sometime between 6-12 weeks. That schedule should have 3 naps - morning, midday, and afternoon. Around 6 months (or when they sleep through the night), they drop the midday nap and make the other 2 a little longer.  Is it possible that my LO will skip the 3-nap schedule entirely, and just put himself on a 2-nap schedule?  Here's why I ask:

My LO is a giant and already weighs about 13lbs, EBF. He sometimes sleeps 6-7hrs straight at night, sometimes not. He is starting to develop a daytime schedule, but there is still a lot of variation to it. I watch for signs of tiredness and help him to bed whenever I see those signs to avoid making him over-tired.  He usually wakes up around 7am, then goes back to sleep around 8. He wakes at 9:30, but then the rest of the day is a crap-shoot. If he had a bad night of sleep, he'll either take 2 more long naps (as the 'experts' tell me to expect), or he'll take a whole bunch of cat-naps (ugh....). If he has a good night of sleep, he could be up for 4-5 hours straight between his 1st and 2nd naps. By the time he wakes from his 2nd nap, we only have a few hours until bed time.

So, as he sleeps better at night AND develops a schedule, do you think he could end up skipping the 3-nap stage entirely?

Re: baby nap schedules???

  • Who knows. Babies nap differently during different stages.  Somethings I personally noticed during my LO's nap schedules

-around 2 months, cat naps happened. My LO was about 12.5 lbs and slept 7-6 am, and cat napped like crazy. 4 naps on a good day, with wake up times ranging from 1-1.5 hours.

-around 4 months, I started leaving her in her crib for 15-20 minute before getting her-if she was still tired she'd fall asleep.  she did hit the wakeful but it wasn't bad and she never cried-just awake more. she fell into a 3 nap schedule-morning, early afternoon, late afternoon. wake up times ranging from 1.5-2.5 hours

-now at 21 weeks, we're in the process of dropping that last nap.

basically, at 2 months, your LO is right on track.  cat naps are normal as are taking longer naps-every baby is different.  if being up for 4-5 hours works for your baby, than do it! some babies don't react adversely to being OT as others-personally my LO needs to be up a little longer to be sleepy for a 1.5-2 hour nap.  2 hours isn't long enough for her, even in the morning. she'll sleep but then wake up right at 45 minutes.

  • DS1 slept 7p until 7a starting at 8 weeks. He would still take a 1.5 to 2hr nap three hours after he woke, so at 10am. We would play and have lunch, and about three hours later at 1pm, he would take another nap. That was typically his last nap unless he cat napped during a car ride or something. He would wake from his last nap around 3, and then go back to sleep at 7 for the night. We were blessed with a great sleeper, and even at 4 years old he still loves to sleep! I'm hoping DS2 will also love to sleep. Schedules are great, but let LO make his own. You can coax him in a certain direction, though. I would recommend trying to keep him up a little longer before that first morning nap. But that's just my experience.
