18 month sleep regression-night waking

Our son has been a great sleeper and was sleeping through the night up until about 2 months ago. We have an excellent bedtime and nap routine and he is able to go to sleep by himself at both. Here's the dilemma: He wakes up once a night crying. Despite our attempts to have him CIO, in which we only last 15-20 mins. I go in his room and try to settle him back down without picking him up. What he does is roll over and stand up wanting me to hold him. I cave at this point and pick him up. I can hold him for a min. or 30 seconds and tell him its time to go back to bed, give him his paci and then put him back down and he will go right back to sleep. The whole thing, once I go into his room take 2 mins. Im worried that by picking him up and not letting him learn how to self-soothe, that I am instigating a bad habit.
I know this doesn't sound so bad, but for me its the interrupted sleep, the fact that I know he can sleep through the night and that I know he doesnt need anything to go back to sleep. I have heard the introducing a lovey or transitional object is helpful. Any other brilliant advice you all have would be greatly appreciated.
To those who are also experiencing this, I totally feel your frustration!
Thanks!

  • Nicb13, thanks for this! I am going to try really hard not to pick him up, and to try what you said. It is so hard when he reaches out to me.
    Best you you as well!

  • We went through the same thing... Got us scratching our heads as to what happened to him?  We would go to his room and pat his back to calm him down, and he fell back to sleep fairly quickly, only to wake up shortly after we leave again.  This lasted a couple of weeks, which was tough. I think it's just a short phase, and now DS is just fine sleeping through the night again.  He still sits up and cries at night once in a while, but then he'll just plop down and fall back to sleep without us getting up to comfort him.  I wouldn't worry too much about going in to put him back to sleep, I think you should just try to keep it as boring as possible, some "shhh" and some patting maybe.  Good luck!
