My DD will be taking her lunch to pre-school this year. Any suggestions other than turkey sandwiches for lunch? Also, any recommendations for lunch boxes? I was thinking about a Skip Hop lunch bag.
We typically just buy a character lunch box at target every year and for the most part they'll last the year. Last year we got a dora thermos one and it's still looking pretty good. We let DD pick out a new lunchbox every year ($7-$10) as part of the going back to school excitement. As for lunches, the sky is the limit. I mean think about what you'd eat for lunch - PB and J (sunflower seed butter), tuna, egg salad, sometimes I'll make her some eggs and pancakes, leftovers from dinner, cheese and crackers, humus and veggies, soup, wraps, pizza, hot dogs, whatever...
Usually I send a main meal which may or may not already have veggies in it, a side of veggies and a side of fruit to snack on so this way she's still got something to eat if she's not feeling the main meal . sometimes I may throw a frozen go-gurt in there (it defrosts by lunch) , or fruit snacks, or a pudding cup, or applesauce, just depends.
Sunflower butter on bread. Ham on pita. I also recommend yogurt smoothie to drink. We have PBK lunch box. I generally pack a sandwhich, a fruit and a drink. sometimes two sides if they are small.
I got good ideas from the cute lunch check in @Brightening does.
check out easylunchbox I have been using ours for two years with two kids and they are just starting to show signs of wear. We used the boxes they come with a first and later switched to the crocodile creek boxes which are also great Get some of those flat ice packs and you are in business. We pack leftovers (mac and cheese is ery popular) sun butter (sunflower butter since his school is nut and meat free) sandwiches), snow peas, annies organic cheddar bunnies, check out a bento box site for cute lunch ideas. We love our lunch punch sandwich cutter. : )

you might try googling "safe lunch boxes" and check out the info about lead, phthalate, pvc, and other substances because not all brands are lead free- they just "meet the requirements for lead etc" which is not the same thing. Even big "trustworthy" brands have differing tolerance levels so you just need to figure out what your comfort and tolerance level is.

I got DD a "Planet Box" lunchbox from PB Kids last year and she loved it. It's like a metal mess kit inside a cute, padded lunch bag. It has all sorts of little compartments for the food which she loves. You can also fit a sandwich in there, but she loves the lunches where she's "picking" the most. We fill it with fresh fruit, veggies, pepperoni, crackers, cut up cheese sticks etc. Add a cute toothpick and she loves it even more.
