Mine started at 36 weeks. But like a pp said, it doesn't mean anything...I was "fingertip" dilated from 36 weeks until I went into labor at 41weeks +1. I wish they never would have checked me - I went into each appt so hopeful that I had progressed and left miserable each time!
Mine started at 35 weeks when they did strep b test. I think they only continued checking bc at 35 weeks I was 2 cm 50% effaced. The next week I was 3 cm and 75%. DD came at 37 weeks. But the morning of the day I went into labor they didn't check me, bc really what's the point? That night mywater broke.

I prefer not to get checked. Every time they do cervical checks, you up your chance for infection. Also, I feel like women get really discouraged when they haven't changed from one appointment to the next. In my opinion, dilation doesn't mean much; you can go from 0 to 10 in an hour. I will wait until I am in labor.
Its important to remember too that its not just dilating that needs to happen for your baby to get here. Your cervix has to thin out (effacement) and baby also has to drop into station. I knew a first time mom that was 4cm dilated for over a week before having her LO. I totally agree with everyone else that getting checked can lead to discouragement.

Mine started checking at 36 weeks, the only change really was my effacement. I stayed a fingertip dilated the entire time, even the day I went into labor.

This is my cousin's wife right now. She's been 4cm dilated for a week now.
My OB started at 36 weeks last time. I'll be declining this time around since I'm having a RCS. I'd rather not know anything about labor since I'm still sensitive about not doing a VBAC
Mine starts at 35/36 weeks. With #1 I was dilated 2cm for 3 weeks and had to be induced. It doesn't mean much until your water breaks or you start contracting.
I usually turn down the early ones. My last midwife started checking at 37 weeks if I wanted I always said no. I didn't want or need to know, the girls came when they came. I did do one check with DD1 at 39 weeks. I was a fingertip. DD2 I had no checks.
My doc is so laid back. He's not going to rush me or the baby, and when I asked, he said if I was feeling good and didn't want to be checked, then that was fine with him. Believe me, you will know when you go in labor. My SIL was 2 cm at 36 weeks and didn't deliver until after her due date.
Re: dilation
And dilation does not always mean a lot. You can 1 or 2cm dilated for a few weeks or not dilated at all and be having your baby in a few hours.
