Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you size up? (Carter's)

So I just went on a major Carter's binge, but I'm afraid I got all the wrong sizes! My son will be 1 the beginning of September and has been hovering around the 50th percentile in height and weight, so I bought everything size 18 months, thinking that should last him through the cold seasons, but when we got home and tried on a few pieces, he is totally swimming in them. Granted, they will probably shrink a little once I wash them, but it's hard to know how much. Then I realized we do have a few Carters things in size 12 months that fit just perfect, with maybe a little room to grow. So should I exchange the new stuff for 12 months? Or was I smart to buy big? He won't likely wear any of this stuff until fall, but I doubt he's gonna grow much in the next 2 months...

Re: Do you size up? (Carter's)

  • IMO you were smart to go big... the winter is long and it would stink to have to buy more stuff at the tail end cuz he grew out of it. I would always rather have clothes be a little big than too small

Yup, I agree, much better to be too big than too small when it comes to clothes.  Plus, depending on where you live it will be cold until at least March or April, so he'll have plenty of time to grow into them.
  • I think it was smart. DD turned 1 on June and she is always TTS. Her 18mo stuff is too big now but fall is right around the corner and will be perfect soon.

  • If you bought all fall/winter stuff then I'd stick with 18 months. Better to be a little big and last through the winter than have to buy all new stuff in the middle of the season.

  • I would definitely keep the 18m stuff.

  • Agree with PPs. And Carter's does shrink a bit when you wash. If you want to prevent that, it helps to do the first wash in cold water.

  • Another vote for keeping the 18 month stuff!  LO is also around the 50th%, and she just turned 13 months.  Her 18month stuff from Carters is a bit big, but it's easy to roll up the pants, and a slightly loose onesie doesn't matter.  On the other hand, her 12mo stuff is almost too small; her pants look like high-water pants, I retired her PJs because she could just barely stretch her legs out, and her onesies barely snapped.  I know I hate it when clothes feel tight and uncomfortable, I imagine the kiddos do too.
  • Thanks for your affirmations! I think I'll stick with the oversized stuff and just buy a few pairs of cheap pants in a smaller size so he's not tripping through the fall.
  • Definitely did the right thing buying 18 months. If he is fitting into 12 months pretty much perfectly right now, and of course he's bound to grow, grow, grow in the next few months too, then he will need the bigger size!  (:

  • I'd stick with 18 mo especially in Carter's.. Once you wash it they shrink a bit.  Plus winter clothes are OK if they are a little big.

  • I would probably stick with the 18 month size just to make sure the same clothes fit him through the winter, but I do want to say that as the mom of two kids who tend to hover around the 20th percentile for weight, I have always found Carter's to run really big, and my kids tend to lag at least one size behind in Carter's compared to their age.

DS is almost 17 months old and wears 2T in all brands except Carters. IMO, that brand runs pretty big. He can fit in 2T for Osh Kosh but not Carters. The pants are way too long. I find that the Carters brand is much better for babies, not toddlers.
I agree that Carter's pants run long but everything else runs very small for us, especially anything that's a one piece. Even all the hoodies that we had from there in 2T are looking really short. It could be that my giant kid is abnormally long in the torso though.

  • I'm all for keeping the 18 months just because stuff to snug they will outgrow quicker but wearing something a size bigger is much better and lasts longer (especially after washes)

  • I always buy big, my LO is in like 17th percentile so its real hard since she still fits smaller sizes. But I'd rather cuff pants and roll sleaves if need be than waste money on clothes that get outgrown quicker than she gets to wear them and still need to buy more in a bigger size to get through the weather.

Does he wear onesies still? Shirts tend to run short on DS as well so we buy him larger t-shirts. I think both our boys are freakishly big for their age...yours being taller but mine probably has a bigger gut! LOL

No, not as a rule but he grew out of those long sleeve/long pant one piece outfits in the 24 month size before he was 12 months old.

  • I'm having a similar issue. It seems like my son has been in 18 months clothes FOREVER. I know he started wearing them around 12-13 months old and he's going to be 20 months. The problem is he is 25 pounds and 33 inches tall...SKINNY baby! I want to buy fall/winter stuff but the 24 month stuff is SOOOOOOOO big on him width wise...he looks ridiuclous. I even bought those extenders, pretty sure they don't fit the snaps on Carters, Old Navy, Gap, or Gerber stuff...which is pretty much his wardrobe...so that stinks. I'm praying that our "summer" here in WI will last long enough to like October that he can have a growth spurt.
