Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Am I doing this wrong?

DS has done 11 hr stretches starting around 4 months. He went through the wakeful and our pedi recommended not picking him up for each wake because he needed to figure out how to put himself back to sleep, especially since he'd already shown he can STTN. Lately he's been going down at normal times (around 7-7:30) but occasionally wakes at around 3:30. I put his paci back in and he's immediately back to sleep. Sometimes he'll wake again around 5 and ill do the same with paci and back to sleep then he's almost always up by 6:30 and at that point I wake and feed him. Does this sound right or should I be feeding him during the earlier wakes? I'd love him to sleep in later, however, when I go back to work in 3 weeks and have to leave for the sitters by 7 I guess it won't really matter.

  • If he doesn't need it, than I wouldn't feed. It sounds like he just needs the paci to go down. If he's not crying I'd recommend just letting him sort it out on his own....

Agreed. If he is really hungry, he'll let you know. Btw sleeping 11+ hours is amazing. My DS wakes at 6:30, too. If you're still tired in the morning, perhaps try going to bed a little earlier.

Thanks for the advice ladies. I am definitely grateful for the 11 hrs! Actually, I'm usually ready to get up by 6:30 as i am not much of a sleeper myself. however, he's usually ready for a nap by 7:30 and it seems sleeping later would allow him to stay up for longer periods in the morning. My concern was really if I should be feeding him at each wake interval or not. If I myself were to be tired, I would definitely plan my own bedtime routines accordingly ;)

  • 11 hours is fantastic!  DD sleeps 8-10 hours straight, leaning more towards the lower end but I love those 10 hour nights.  I can't believe only 3 short months ago I was hating life waking up every few hours!!  I agree with all the other pp - he'll let you know if he wants more than the paci.

Funny - my mom tells me all the time how she thinks DD sleeping over 8 hours is amazing and that neither I nor my brother slept that long at her age (4 months).

  • Crequito,I was in the same boat waking every couple hrs until all of a sudden at 4 months he slept! It's glorious lol. My mom is the opposite though. She kept saying how my sister and I STTN right away. Not what I wanted to hear during those months lol!
