Success after IF

4 month sleep (or lack thereof)

Who has experience with the 4 month wakeful? What was it like for you?

I have to say, maybe it's because I was prepared for it, but it's not *too* bad.

G has gone from having a predictable nap/bed schedule (3 naps during the day, STTN 6-6) to absolutely no pattern. She's still sleeping one or two good long stretches at night, but they are all over the place. Saturday night she went to bed at 6:30, but then woke up every 45 minutes or so until finally falling to sleep from 10-5. Sunday night she feel asleep from 8-3, then again from 4-7. It's just such a guessing game.

How long does this last? She isn't cranky, just napping more frequently during the day. I am looking forward to our regularly scheduled program again soon, though!

Re: 4 month sleep (or lack thereof)

  • 4 month hit at the same time that E was dealing with bronchitis for months on end.  So it's hard to tell what was due to bronchitis and was was due to the wakeful.  Thinking back I don't remember it being that bad, but I know it was bc I posted on here several times about crying in the shower every night because I was so exhausted.  Hahah. Funny how the mind plays tricks on you like that.  So basically, I'm not help at all.  Just wanted to let you know that even if it gets worst, you will forget later.  :)

  • I am no help, but we're in the same boat. It's not that bad - but it's the lack of predictability that is KILLING me.

Last week she went from STTN one night, to going down at 9 and waking up at 12:30 before going back down for her long stretch.... This went on for several nights in a row and it killed me. It's much easier waking up at 3:30 or so when I've had a good stretch of sleep vs. 12:30.

Friday night she played the up every 45 min or less game from 10-12, which was the exact time I tried to go to bed. I freaked out at midnight b/c I was so tired and DH was just sleeping away --- then she finally went down from 12-4 and then from 430-730..... Sat night she gave me a glorious 8 hour stretch, and last night was more finicky again. Going down at 8:15, up at 2, up at 4 and then up at 5:30 for the day.... again, not that bad - but the lack of consistancy leaves me exhausted.

  • I remember that age. G was up around 3 am every night, but he was truly hungry. I would breastfeed him and then he would go back to sleep until around 8 am. I don't remember it being terrible, but I am sure happy that he slept through the night after that! I hope it passes quickly for you :)

  • One of my boys struggled for (maybe) a week. And, I'm not even sure it was the wakeful. I think it was more related to the developmental milestone of rolling, as he always struggles with sleep during those periods (struggling BIG time with pulling up now!!). The only difference was a problem settling down at the beginning of the night- no issues once he got to sleep. I don't even know I would have thought much of it if I wasn't on be lookout for the wakeful period.

Now, DS2 is a different story. That kid struggles through every little regression, growth spurt, milestone, teething... He is pretty much back to back with drama with a few days of good sleep in between the issues. Right now, he's in the middle of the 8-10 month regression and his 5th tooth. I'm so tired!

Our naps didn't change much but bedtime certainly did...it started to take 2-3h to get him to bed because he woke up every time he rolled back onto his back from his side. And then we had a one week stretch where he was waking almost every hour overnight. It was pretty bad. After about 4 weeks total he started to get back to normal and then we did some sleep training...which we are still working on, but life is manageable again.

Also, I should add that even prior to the wakeful my LO fed at 9pm, 3am, and 6am still. Now post wakeful and sleep training he eats at 9am, 4 or 5am and 7 or 8am.
