To swaddle or not? Suggestions XP

DS just turned 3 months and we have recently transitioned him into his crib in his own room this past weekend. We have always swaddled him with SwaddleMe blankets from the beginning and they've worked just fine keeping him snug. DS never really loved being swaddled he just kind of tolerated it and it did help him sleep at night (he's currently sleeping 5-6 hours at night). The problem now is he's recently discovered his hands and is always wanting to suck his thumbs/hands. Now he wakes up angry because he wants to suck his hands but he can't because of the swaddle and I worry because he tries so hard that I've even caught him with the swaddle over his face. To make things worse he's also starting to roll over too so now I'm extra worried of him either pulling his swaddle over his head or rolling over and suffocating in effort to get out. I've tried just swaddling him from the hands down but he still has the startle reflex which startles him awake a lot. So now I'm not sure what to do, he sleeps better and longer with being swaddled but he's starting to hate it without it the wakes himself all the time. Any suggestions on what else I could do or other blanket type things that can help him in this in between moment he's currently in?

  • I haven't tried them myself so I can't speak to how they work, but someone recommended the zipadeezip for when you are transitioning them to sleeping without the swaddle.

  • I have the exact same problem, my little girl is just over 3 months and she pulls her hand out and the swaddle blanket is up near her neck. I'm I.terested in any suggestions too

  • I don't have experience with this yet, but I've read some mothers do a slow transition. They start with swaddling with one arm out for a week and then both arms out.
  • Also, what other board did you post this? I'm curious what the responses are :)

I posted also in the 3-6 board. I just bought a halo sleep slack and will try the one arm thing see if that helps.
  • My DD is just about 4 weeks and sleeps with her hands over or near her ears. She was sleeping 5-6 hours at a time but recently started to get fussy and wake more often. I bought a woombie awhile ago and didn't think of trying it since she loves her hands up so much, but with how fussy she's been we gave it a shot. It worked perfect bc it zips up and then a Velcro piece wraps around the arms/chest. However I got less sleep bc she somehow managed to push her hands up by her ears anyway which in turn made all of the fabric bunch under her upper lip. I woke every 30 mins or so to pull it down. I hope your swaddling efforts work better. But if you want your LO's arms contained it really works.
  • I use an Aden + Anais swaddle blanket and just swaddle my LO from the chest down. That way, he has his arms free and isn't pulling blankets up over his face, but he still has that snug swaddled feeling. So far, it works great for us.

  • I just tried the halo sleep sack swaddle. I use it with arms out and she still slept like normal.

  • Last night was our first attempt to wean the swaddle.
Yeah, nooo. They both got back in their swaddle after our fourth time waking up.

Ugh. I'll have swaddled ten year-olds.
