Back to school GTKY

Do you have a favorite back to school memory?
Did your family have any traditions?

1. Yes. One year, my brother and I got up at 430 and started getting ready for school. We tried being quiet, but we were kids. My mom was less than pleased. We made a huge mess trying to cook eggs. I think I was 8 and he was 10.

2. No traditions. Just our mom pushing us out the door to catch the bus.

Re: Back to school GTKY

  • On the first day of school, our dad usually always got up early and he would always pour both my brother and i bowls of fruit loops with him and he would tell us stories of when he would go to school... These memories i hold closest as my father passed in 2007 a month after i graduated high school -- So i guess mine is both a tradition and a fav back to school memory :)

  • 1.  We grew up in a neighborhood where everyone had kids our age.  My favorite memory is lining up at the bus stop for elementary school and the parents took our pictures and counted the kids.  One year there were 35 kids.

    2.  Back to school shopping and taking pictures on the front step our first day.

  • I loved getting new supplies, too.  I had a Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper and LOVED it.

  • We always had "back to school breakfast" the Sunday before school started. My mom would pull out the good china dishes and we would eat in the dining room and drink milk out of the nice wine glasses. I actually went home over the weekend and brought it up and mom was so mad that she didn't think to do it yesterday since we are both teachers and start school this week!

  • I am so stealing the back to school breakfast!  Except we will do it the day of school. She will love drinking out of my wine glasses.

We weren't allowed to have Trapper Keepers womp womp womp
I hate that A can't have designer things. She has to have solid colored folders and spirals. I feel like it takes away the fun of back to school shopping. That was my favorite part.

  • That's so sad.  I wonder what DD/DS's school is going to require when they get there in a few years.  It's a private school, so we know about the uniforms already.

  • I was just lurking on MM on GBCN and they were saying all the supplies (pencils, crayons, etc) are shared with the whole class now.  That makes me irrationally angry.

J's school does that. I hate it, and so does she. We have to buy certain colored folders, spirals, etc... It sucks that we can't personalize things for her. She is really looking forward to middle school next year (gulp) and the freedom to have her own pencil case.

  • Allie's only unique thing is her backpack and lunch box. Her uniforms even have a certain look.

Did you get that certain backpack you were searching for awhile back?  I can't remember the specifics, but it looked pretty cool.

  • No. We couldn't pull the trigger on such and expensive backpack for a first grader. She destroyed her backpack last year by dragging it. It was a Britto. I think we might get it for weekend trips. We did get her Britto notebooks and folders for the house. She will use them for homework. We got them at Wal-Greens (of all places), on clearance. It was a nice find for a great price!

No "traditions" but my favorite thing was shopping for school supplies.  In elementary school I was all about the Lisa Frank.  I remember when I got to the higher grades were you needed more than 1 notebook and folder I HAD to have the designs on the notebooks and folders match. GOD FORBID I had the dog design on my math notebook and the unicorn design on my math folder.

Ditto ALL of this! I was the exact same way with the matching! Like many of you said, most schools in my area require that everyone bring the same items and then it's collectively shared with the group. I hate it too. That's not fun at all.
