Shin splints :(

So I came home from running 2 days ago and my right lower leg and foot were hurting a bit. I ignored it. I usually run 4-5 days a week, 3-4 miles each time. It's to the point now where I can't even run anymore. Had anyone else had this? I have been doing the elliptical to try and make up for my lost fitness. How long does this usually take to heal? I've been taking extra calcium now to. This stinks!

  • Are you pregnant? If so, I had a similar experience when I was in the weeks 20-26 or so. I think my body was adjusting to the change in weight and where I was carrying it. If you think about it, your body has to compensate for the weight in the front with slight changes, which will make you sore differently than prior to becoming pregnant. Also, your circulation is challenged with more blood in your system, so that may affect your legs' recovery. I thought I was going to be done running at 22 weeks, but I'm still going and I'm past 35w!

    If you aren't pregnant and it's just a random hitch in your workouts, I recommend mixing it up as you have and making sure to give your body an "off" day each week where you allow your muscles to recover adequately. Oftentimes people underestimate the impact of a "rest" day, but they are just as important as a workout in terms of reaping the benefits! I hope that helps.
