Creative ways to "sneak" dairy?

My 13 mo old is almost weaned (very mixed feelings about this and feeling emotional but that's an entirely different post!) and the only liquid she will drink from a sippy is water - not pumped milk, not cows milk. And I can't do chocolate milk as she loathes sweet foods, even fruit. I've been mixing in a little cows milk when making her scrambled eggs each morning and she likes yogurt and cheese. However, I worry she will grow tired of yogurt if I offer it too many times a day and I can't over do the cheese as she gets constipated. Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, what are you doing to make sure your little gets enough dairy?

  • Dairy isn't an essential nutrient.  Calcium is, but dairy is certainly not even close to the only way to get it (and some argue it's not the best way).  Offer veggies with calcium and other foods (like sesame seeds in tahini or on broccoli (also a source of calcium).)  Consider substitutes (almond milk or coconut milk, for instance, or even fortified juice in small quantities).  But mostly focus on a wide variety of healthy foods that are good sources of calcium and she will be fine.

  • One way we add milk into my baby's diet is by roughly mashing up sweet potatoes with milk. We just do it cause it tastes good, but I guess it does effectively sneak some calcium in there.
  • Potatoes, great idea! Broccoli, etc - duh. I can be pretty dense sometimes. :-/
  • it could just be because the cow's milk tastes soooo different and you might need to try a few brands to. Things might change once there is no BM in the diet. LO loves cheese and yogurt, eats it every day. I buy the large tub of whole milk yogurt and mix different things into it.
One breakfast recipe that LO loves is cooking rice in milk, then adding chopped apricots with 10 mins left of the rice cooking. Turn the heat off and sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Ooh I love the rice and apricot recipe! Thanks!
  • We do smoothies every morning. We use milk, fruit, Greek yogurt, fruit, and sometimes spinach. We throw in honey or chocolate syrup on occasion as well. It's not just the calcium in milk that's important, it's the fat as well, which is why soy or almond milk is not a good substitute at this age. In addition to foods that are rich in calcium also try to add in ones fish in healthy fats, like avocados, if she won't drink milk.

  • My sister makes her son macaroni salads and potato salads but instead of using mayo she uses plain Greek yogurt. He loves it.
  • I doubt she'll get tired of yogurt, my DS has had 1 yogurt every day for the past year. He still gets excited when he sees it!
You could try smoothies or add a bit of cheese to other things she likes. I usually add a sprinkling of cheese to scrambled eggs.
