How long for LO to fall asleep at night?

We went for a bike ride then came home and had a bath and he was in bed at 7:45, usually we shoot for 7:30 and he took 2 hours to fall asleep! It has been taking an hour for the past month or so and I don't know what's going on. He's also teething so don't know if that has something to do with it or if anyone has any advice. His normal schedule is bed by 7:30, falls asleep around 8:30 sleeps all night and wakes up around 7, nap from 1-3.

Re: How long for LO to fall asleep at night?

  • It varies. Sometimes he goes right down, some nights it takes an hour. We do our bedtime routine and put him in bed. We don't go back in there unless he is screaming, and even then we don't pick him up. We tell him he needs to lay back down and then quickly leave the room.

  • Anywhere from 0-30 minutes with little to no crying.
  • Do you think maybe his night schedule might be a little too long for what he needs and that's why it takes him so long to fall asleep at night? Just a thought.

My LO sleeps from 8pm-6:30am and then takes 2 - 1.5 hr naps for a total of 13 1/2 hrs. It sounds like your LO sleeps about the same amount of time as mine at night but yours is in bed an hour longer. Just thinking that could be the reason. But don't know. Some children do need more time to unwind. LO has taken up to an hour on a few occasions when he's been really wound up from the day but it is not common.

  • It depends on how well he napped and what time he was up in the morning. On most (normal) days, it takes him 5-25 minutes. He normally talks to myself, rolls around, snuggles with his giraffe.

We have gone through a few phases where it takes him an hour to fall asleep. I usually give him a week to see if things fall back into place before deciding to adjust his schedule.

  • After a year of awful sleeping we finally got him trained... I put him in bed, he cuddles with his blanket and passes out.

  • My DS goes to bed so late! He is always asleep before midnight, usually around 10 o'clock, and he sleeps about 9 hours a night. Takes 2 naps a day. As long as they are getting 12 hours or more of sleep a day, then there is nothing wrong IMO.

  • He usually falls asleep after a couple minutes. If your son is happy in there, you could just leave him, but I know that can be hard. Can you move his nap earlier at all? Maybe then he'd be more tired when it's time for bed.
