Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Chronic Constipation

Hi All....

My son is 8 1/2 months old, and seems to be always constipated.  He grunts, gets bright red, pushes with all his might, but only gets out a pebble, or a small harder "tootsie roll."  He is breast fed, he gets jarred foods a couple times a day.  I have tried everything... stopping cereal, taking a rectal temp, q-tip with vaseline, no banana's or other binding foods, prunes, prune juice, other juices, pressure points, tummy massage, water, warm baths, karyo, I even tried milk of magnesia for a day (peds nurses suggestion)... I have no idea what to do for the little dude.  He seems fine during the day, no pain, his tummy isn't hard, its just when he's pushing that he seems to have issue.
Any suggestions?  Thanks for any help you can give us!

Re: Chronic Constipation

  • Weird question, but how is his core strength?  I only ask because I used to nanny for a little girl who had trouble pooping and her physical therapist thought it was tied to her stomach muscles not being as strong.  What I used to do to help her was if she was pooping and having trouble I would take off her diaper and push her knees to her stomach, that seemed to help.  Maybe give that a try?

  • He's pure muscle! No problem there. We've tried the bicycle legs as well, and sadly it did nothing. Thank you so much for the reply!

  • What does your pedi suggest? Have you tried increasing his water intake? I feel for him (and you) my DD has struggled with constipation to the point of impaction. No fun at all!

  • My pedi said that as long as he's getting something out a day, he's "ok." But he's not watching the little guy struggle, it breaks my heart. He drinks a ton of water, I don't think I can increase it anymore. We have his 9 month appointment on the 20th, so I will discuss it more then. I just really want to help him :(
It sounds silly, but I was half tempted to even try taking a stool softener (they are safe to take while BF) in hopes he gets some of it in my breast milk. I'm desperate!

  • We have dealt with the same problem. We took LO to a doctor about it around 4 months. He advised giving juice or water daily. We give LO 2 oz of prune juice everyday in the morning. Doing this has mostly solved the problem. We have to be really consistent or else it acts up again. Good luck, I hope you find a solution.

  • My son is having the same exact issue, and his pedi said to try Mirlax in his bottles or food. And it really has helped. We only have been using a 1/4 of a teaspoon twice a day, and its been helping. the pedi said once he had soft stolls consistently then to keep using that same amount of mirlax for 30 days. It's helping us, worth a try!
  • I will look into the Mirlax as well! Thank you!

DItto this. We had to give DD a water/prune juice combo every day around 10-11 mo to keep her regular. Now that she is older we use Miralax, fiber gummies and a high fiber diet to help.

  • I have had the same problem the last week, lots of prunes and peaches seemed to help. I also cut out all grains for now. That and I give her extra water when giving her purees.

  • My son has been similar over the past week and it's awful watching him suffer! So hugs to you.

I stopped all solids except apples and am trying to encourage BM and water. He had a softer poop today... Knock on wood that it's working. I hope your little guy gets some relief too!
