Meltdown Help

Tonight was a very bad night with DS. He had a 2-hour long meltdown, during which he repeatedly tried to bite, hit, and pinch me as he screamed and cried. He just turned 2 and is non-verbal, so he has no way to tell us what is wrong. It all started when I put him in his high chair to eat. I tried rocking him, holding him, cartoons, a bottle, all of his favorite foods, stepping outside, and finally putting him in his crib to cool down (he ended up climbing out for the first time because he was so upset). I don't know what to do, and DH just sits there and stares at him like he is possessed or something - he doesn't know how to handle the situation either. He is extremely strong (all of his nurses constantly comment on that), so we have to get this under control or at least better before he gets even stronger. It seems to mostly be me that he lashes out at, although sometimes he will try to bite his sister and his speech therapists when they have something he wants. He doesn't have an official diagnosis yet other than his physical congenital defects. His developmental assessment isn't until November, but he sees his Neuro again for seizures this month. Is this something he can help us with? I feel so lost as to how to help my baby :(

Re: Meltdown Help

  • Oh yes, there have been many days when Mommy needs a beer or two to unwind! I wish we could just ignore him, but he can climb out of his crib and if we shut him in his room, he will throw himself against the door over and over again. The pain doesn't faze him, he seems to crave it, actually :( This just stinks.

  • When my oldest was about 2 his behavior was out of control, towards me mainly. He would kick me in the throat during diaper changes. Head butt me. Scream at me. Hit me. It was scary. He was also speech delayed. In our case it turned out to be somewhat of an independence power struggle. Once he potty trained there was a drastic reduction in the episodes. Giving him more "power" as an individual seemed to help as well.
  • I sure hope it gets better. He literally chases me down during this and claws/pinches and bites my legs, but when I pick him up, he starts with the hitting and throwing himself backward. It is heartbreaking, frustrating, and scary all at the same time :(
