What would you NOT recommend?

I have recently started registering for baby items and am completely overwhelmed by all the products available. I don't want to get a lot of things I don't need. For instance, do I need a regular Boppy and a travel Boppy? Any items that you think are over rated and would recommend skipping?

Re: What would you NOT recommend?

  • Do you plan on travelling a lot? I did not get a travel Boppy and can't see that it would be necessary. There are so many products out there. It might be easier if you ask us some things you are skeptical on and we can tell you yes or no. It's just much harder for us to tell you what we didn't use than what we did use. Know what I mean?

  • I wouldn't recommend a bumbo seat or a seat like it. We got one like it that I think was made by Summer Infant and it even came with a tray with toys on it too and he barely used it. There's such a short period of time that it's actually useful that it's really just a waste of space.

  • I would totally wait to buy pacifiers.  When my daughter was born, I bought a shit ton of them.  She hated pacifiers.  Wouldn't use them at all.  Was a waste of money.  However, some kids love them!

  • What the heck is a travel boppy. I have been nursing and traveling with a regular one just fine.
Pacifiers, sterilizer, tons of bottles (dont know what baby will prefer), baby towels, don't buy a pump - new insurance rules should mean its covered.
If you are tight on space you could totally do without a million things - for ds1 we were in nyc and minimized - had a swing but not a bouncy, a crib but no pnp or rnp, etc.

This is most definitely not universally true for all women. It is true for some. Some will only get a single manual pump and some will get a double electric. Some will get none. She should check with her insurance company and verify what, if anything, is covered.

  • I didn't realize they made a travel boppy. Really? 8-|

I wouldn't stock up on any one item really. Things like bottles, diapers, paci's, lotions, soaps and so many other things are based off the babies build and preference. Same thing with clothes. You'll never know how quickly your child is going to grow and what you may buy for certain seasons may not fit.

I agree with Sugarland though - there are so many things on the market that it's hard to think of the non-necessary items.

  • Wipe Warmers and Specialty diaper trash cans.. We used the warmer for maybe a day, and just regular trash for diapers.

Great point. It's true under mine. Although I still have the Ameda which works fine.

I agree on warmers and diaper pails.

  • Yes...the amount of stuff available (and some at ridiculous prices) is unreal.  We didn't buy much of anything.  Had 1 bottle (good thing, after we finally got DD breastfeeding she didn't take bottles anymore), 1 paci, not much for gear, just the basics.  Borrowed a swing from a friend to see if she liked it, and she didn't.  I will do the same for this LO. She loved her bouncy seat tho.  Like PP said, each baby is different, so you can't stock up on anything.  Just 1 or 2 of different things and if they like it, you get more.  DD didn't get attached to the paci until 5-6 weeks. I found there are a lot of things available that are really just luxuries (for you or baby).  Like the wipe warmer - I honestly think it's something that baby just gets used too.  However, that's just an opinion :)
    Good luck deciding! :)

  • Bottle Warmers too..my DD gets room temp water in her formula bottles. When I was feeding frozen BM, I put hot water from my Keurig in a cup to defrost the milk quickly.

Bouncers if you are getting a swing or RnP. We never use our bouncer and the vibrations did nothing.

Baby shoes - other than maybe for photo shoots, your non walking baby does not need shoes. Heck, my DD barely wears socks! lol

Like many have said though, every baby is different so what works for one may not for another.

Please only use tap water oon the coldest setting for your baby. I have worked in municipal water quality for years and hot water tanks in homes add a lot of impurities to water. Always warm cold water with a kettle or pot.
