When did theme parties start?

When I was a kid I had never heard of or been to a theme birthday party (okay except sleepover or a pool party). Then I met my husband a few years ago and his sons were talking about what kind of party they want, so now every year they decide a theme. When did people start having theme parties for kids? Is this new to anyone else?

    I never had any themes to my birthday parties.  Unless being awesome counts as a theme.

    I had a Simpson themed party when I was 8... Bart Simpson even showed up (my mom's friend's kid who was a few years older than I was dressed up in the costume.)

    I have an early uo I love doing theme parties. I do a lot of DIY so I don't spend a lot but I really freaking enjoy doing them

    I'm with you, I grew up with them and have a lot of fun doing them for my kids!

    I agree! And.... the teacher in me makes it worse! My classroom has a theme every year!
