Babies: 3 - 6 Months

scheduled nap times

my son will be 4 months on saturday. do you guys have a set nap schedule during the day? Is it too early to try this?
so far he naps whenever he wants, but not passed 5:00 because i want him good and tired at his bedtime which is 8:00.
He usually naps 2-3 times a day.

When should i try a nap schedule at set times??
Thanks!

Re: scheduled nap times

  • My LO has naturally fallen into an eat, play, sleep schedule. Some days she takes 3 naps, some days 4. She wakes up for the day typically between 6:30 - 7:00, and usually takes her first nap around 8:30. Her routine isn't very consistent, though. I let her set her own routine because if not, she gets cranky. If she doesn't get a good nap in during her normal routine, then it sets off her schedule for the rest of the day. Plus her bedtimes have been all over the place, anywhere between 6:45 and 9:00. Lately she's been going to sleep by 7:30pm, and I'm hoping we can keep this going. Last night she slept 11 hours straight. The night before she woke up once. Last week she was waking up twice. Keeps me on my toes for sure! I wish we could get a more consistent schedule, but I don't think that's going to happen right now.

  • We are following the Babywise routine of eat, play, sleep.  Our little one is 3.5 months old and is currently following the scheduled below.  She eats 6 times a day and takes 5 naps with a short catnap at the end of the day.  Most naps are around 1.5 hours and she has been STTN since about 2 months.

    Wake: 6:30 - 7, Eat & Play, Nap 8:15-9:30

    Wake: 9:30, Eat & Play, Nap 11-12:30

    Wake: 12:30, Eat & Play, Nap 1:45-3:15

    Wake: 3:15, Eat & Play, Nap 4:45-6:00

    Wake: 6:00, Eat & Play, Nap 7:30-8:30/9:00

Wake: 8:30/9:00, Eat, Down for the night

In about a week or so we will be reducing her feedings to 5 times a day and following the schedule below:

    Wake: 7, Eat & Play, Nap 9-10:30

    Wake 10:30, Eat & Play, Nap 12:30-2

    Wake: 2, Eat & Play, Nap 4-5:30

Wake 5:30, Eat & Play, No nap

8:00-8:30 Final feeding and down for the night

I should add that each nap is 1.5-2 hours except the last which is about 45 minutes. I think the key to a good night's sleep is enough sleep during the day to avoid fatigue at nigh but not so much sleep during the day that LO isn't tired enough at night. Good luck!
Wow, he sure naps a lot! I wonder if this will continue as he turns 4-months-old.

Ditto this. I would kill for naps longer than 20 minutes. I barely have enough time to pee before she wakes up. I miss the days of 2hr naps. Of course then I was longing for less naps so I could enjoy interacting with baby.

  • To answer your question, I follow LO's cues and most day they are similar in schedule but I don't force anything. Right now she wakes between 630-800. We also follow eat, play, sleep but occasionally she will eat a little snack before nap. She goes down for naps roughly 2.5 hours after waking.

Her first nap of the day is about 1.5hrs and the rest are 20-30 minutes.

Our sorta scheduled nap times are usually around 930, 12, 3, 530 and bedtime is between 7 and 8

  • How do you ladies get your babies down for naps? I tend to bf mine to sleep which isn't the best situation but its working for now.

I nurse to sleep too, nothing wrong with it. Once he is asleep I swaddle him and put him down

OP - you can't schedule nap time if baby isn't tired. Just follow his cues and put him down accordingly. Around 6 months you can start to be more in charge

When she gives me cues that she's tired, I lay her in her crib with a paci, her little animal blanket, and play white noise. Sometimes it takes her a while to fall asleep, and she'll get cranky. I just keep putting the paci back in her mouth and caress her a bit.
