Hiking while pregnant

Hello ladies!

Any of you ladies been hiking while pregnant? Some of my friends are going hiking this weekend and is love to go, but since I'm 33 weeks now and breathing sucks these days I'm not too sure ill be able to keep up. I've stayed pretty active trough out my pregnancy but haven't been hiking any trails. Anyone still doing any kind of fun outdoor activities still?

I went hiking a few weeks ago - and it was a blast!  I was the slowest one (strange since I am.. or at least was... a fit person).  I would say go for it if 1. You have been at least getting some sort of exercise so it isn't a shock to your body 2. You drink a ton of water 3. Be careful.  You will have poor balance!

If your friends are willing to slow down for you, I would say go for it!  I say this assuming that it is fairly easy hiking trails - not like a crazy mountain hike or anything...

  • I went for a 2 hour hike today, I've been walking this whole pregnancy but first hike. It went really well, had a lot more trouble with the uphills than I used to and made sure I had lots of water it was really good. Just make sure your friends know that you may not be able to keep up the same pace.

  • I hiked up some bleachers yesterday and started getting painful cramps. LOL

If you've stayed active throughout your pregnancy you should be fine :) I definitely haven't! The weather has been BEAUTIFUL in the northeast, I'd say perfect hiking weather for pregnant ladies. Makes me wish I could get out there with you!

I did go camping for about 15 hours back in June, but it was too hot to sleep there overnight so I went home and came back the next day. I went home without a single mosquito bite. Awesome.

  • This probably varies person to person. I went camping at the end of June and I struggled with hiking.  Even though I took it slow and stayed hydrated, I got intense BH's throughout the entire hike.  If you can do it though more power to you!

  • I did short hikes with low elevation gain. 1-2 miles and fairly flat...an easy stroll, really. That's all I can do.
  • As PPs have said, as long as you've continued to be active, you will probably be fine. You just may not be able to keep the same pace as everyone else. Keep hydrated and don't try to overdo it.

  • If your friends are willing to be lenient on the pace....go for it!
    1. Listen to your body
    2. Hydrate
    3. Have fun :)

  • I'm still running and I went for a short hike along a semi-hilly trail yesterday. My only word of caution would be to watch your footing! Several times I tripped/stumbled because I'm just clumsier right now. But if you are used to hiking and exercising, there is no reason why you can't go!

  • I went last week although it was more of an outdoor stroll than the off trail stuff my husband and I used to enjoy. Had a few BH later but it was HOT here in TX, even after sundown. Oh, and be prepared to be swarmed by MF'ing mosquitos.

  • I second everyone else with balance, hydration, your own pace etc. I'll add that when I went hiking I wore my belly band that I have for running and it was a big help. If you have one I'd recommend wearing it. Have fun!
  • Today, I went hiking through the parking lot with my cart full of groceries. It was slightly uphill and 93 degrees outside.. it wasn't pleasant.

If you really want to, then go for it. Just keep a very close eye on hydration and turn back if it gets uncomfortable.

  • Lol. I can't walk a block without getting intense shooting pains in the vagina. I think you're nuts. And I'm jealous. Clearly you're not experiencing the same.
  • We hiked Chimney Rock last week when I was 35.5 weeks. I'm sure my OB would kick my ass for it, but I didn't have any trouble. I did have a little tightening and pressure that night, though.

  • Thank you ladies :) I think ill give it a shot weather is supposed to good that day. But you're all right Ill have to keep my own pace now and ill turn around if I feel I won't make it.
  • I don't even hike when I'm not pregnant so I wouldn't ever go pregnant!
  • I went hiking at 22 weeks... I don't know if I (personally) would do well now. LOL!
