Day one of no boobies...(vent) *Update*

I simply cannot breastfeed anymore. I'm done, I reached my limit. Since becoming pregnant my supply has tanked and my nipples are extremely sore. DD has been self weaning for the past couple months. She only has want boobie before nap, before bedtime, and during occasional night wakeups.

Today, she went down for her nap fine without BFing...tonight a whole different story. She is currently in her crib alternating between yelling "mommy" and "boobie". This has been going on for the past half hour. I hope she stops soon and STTN tonight...

Sorry for a pointless post, I just needed to vent.

*Update*

We are doing really well!! Last night I tried the milk and it seemed to help. We did our bedtime routine and read a couple stories. After we were finished she asked for boobies and I said no. I then asked her if she wanted mommy to sing her a song to which E responded yes. About 10 songs later, I got her settled down in her crib and she fell asleep with little fussing. She STTN which helped too. As far as me, I am not sore at all, which confirms my suspicions that I had very little supply anyway.

  • Oh man, that sounds tough! I can understand that you are done and I hope that it will get easier very soon! Do you give her a nighttime bottle/cup of milk or something as a replacement? A new bedtime routine to shake things up for her, so she doesn't expect the boob? I honestly have no idea if those things would help (I weaned Alex when he was 12 months old within a week), but maybe worth a try?
We did start a new bedtime routine right when I weaned him and now read a ton of books on the floor in his room and he loves that! So maybe that did help somehow.

    Hugs! <3

  • Thanks Ricola :)

We read her extra stories tonight. She gets milk with dinner, but I did not think to give her any before bed...maybe I will try that tomorrow night.

She is now only crying intermittently, FX she falls asleep soon!

  • That sucks! I don't have any advice but the milk before bed sounds good. I hope it gets better soon!

  • Good luck!  Seems like forever ago that we weened - amazed that you did it for so long and while pregnant!

I know we still give a milk sippy at night so that's what works for us.  Sometimes he'll wake up in the middle of the night and I put water in his sippy and he'll grab it & go right back to sleep.  I think he likes the comfort of having his sippy there in the night.

  • I'm right there with you. Unfortunately, my supply hasn't really changed, I'm not sore, AND DS has shown ZERO interest in self weaning...I just want some non-nursing time before LO#2 starts up again.

DH has pretty much taken over the bedtime routine. If/when DS wakes in the night, DH has started (for the first time in 19 months because I always nursed DS back down) taking over those duties as well. I've planned a girls' trip for October. It will be the first time I will be away from DS overnight. We're hoping it seals the deal for weaning.

  • Kudos to you for breastfeeding this long, especially while pregnant. I hope she goes down easier tonight.

Good luck to you as well during the weaning process!

Thanks again everyone. DD fortunately STTN last night, so after about an hour of on and off crying she fell asleep. Today, she has not asked for a boob at all. I have been trying to keep her occupied. I will be giving her milk in a sippy closer to her bedtime tonight to see if that helps.

  • Way to go on making it so long! I'm glad the transition seems to be going pretty well for you. I'm 9 weeks pregnant and my supply is starting to go too .... bedtime has been quite traumatic a few times when it's been lowest. I'm a little bit nervous about how this is going to go. So far I'm just taking it a week at a time and not planning to make efforts to wean, but cutting down is imperative because the milk is simply not there all the time any more..

  • DS weaned himself when I got pregnant, I think he stopped when I was around 8-9 weeks, but I did as others said, he gets milk in a sippy cup while we read his stories, then we brush his teeth and put him to bed, and he gets milk in the morning when we get him up (which were the last two feeds to go when we weaned), I think this made the transition easier as he got more milk with the sippy as my supply was tanking at the time.
