Bathroom question!

Ok so this might be TMI but is anyone still having problems with their bowel movements!? I can not seem to live with out my stool softener now,man it sucks! If I stop taking it I fear going to the bathroom. Is anyone still taking them?? Are things never going to be the same again. Im just so sad about this, wish things were normal again.

Re: Bathroom question!

  • I have heard that your body may get dependent on stool softeners. I stopped taking them around 3 weeks postpartum and it took a few weeks for things to get back to normal.

Guess I am going to have to try just live a few weeks with out taking them :-S
  • It took me about three full months to get back to normal, took stool softeners the whole time

  • FWIW both my primary doc and my OB said that remaining on stool softerners for the rest of my lfe was better than the harm of hard bowel movements would have on my bum. I had hemmeroids and an anal fissure PP and was terrified to go off of them.

However I did alot of research and talked with my primary doc and I was able to wean completely off a few weeks ago.

First I upped my fiber significantly (instant high fiber oatmeal by quaker or fiber bars are an easy way to do this at 10gs each). I was told to aim for 25-30g of fiber a day but you might want to build up to it. I did an immediate jump and it resulted in painful gas and bloating for me and little one. I read later to increase the fiber over a couple weeks to that amount to void bloating.

Secondly I drink tons of water and make sure to eat fruit and veggies everyday.

I was taking 3 pills a day and each week I would drop it by 1 pill. Now I haven't taken any in over two weeks.

Lastly if you are dealing with hemmeroids or a fissure you need to fix that first with meds, sitz baths, etc. if not you risk causing more trouble by aggravating them.
