How to denote sarcasm.

To avoid confusion, and ensuing bitchfests, can we just use a tilde to denote sarcasm? The jokes seem to be killed when you have to write in parentheses that it was a joke. Because, really, does the tilde ever legitimately get used in regular conversation?

I don't think enough people know to use a tilde to show sarcasm. I just recently heard of it. It looks odd to me!

I use italics to emphasize a point and not sound so monotone....in text. Maybe that doesn't make much sense. haha.

Tildes are kinda cute, like little waves. Waves of sarcasm.

Unnecessary to some, I'm sure. But there are plenty of times that I've wanted to say something sarcastic, but didn't because unless I write in parentheses that it's sarcasm, plenty of people wouldn't get it and flip their shit.

Now I'd say that's obviously sarcasm, but someone new to the boards might like "wooo tots pregger, gotta call my mom!" and then be all upset when AF comes. Actually... that would make the post more fun to read. I second MeatandBandP's motion of "unnecessary".

haha, no, in those instances I think any denotation of sarcasm should be avoided for comedic relief.

I could easily pick out the sarcasm in example 1, it's really not that difficult. :-p

OP:Again you could always just ask. I highly doubt anyone is going to remember to turn on their "sarcasm font"

DH's entire family doesn't comprehend sarcasm. It really makes family events with the in-laws fun because sarcasm is my native language. Fortunately, all the other spouses are fluent, so when a sarcastic comment flies over DH's family's collective head, it's doubly funny because their reactions are great.

DH understands better than most of his family, but my family still calls him Sheldon. Bless his little cotton socks.
